Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium seeks an individual to develop and implement programs and activities related to natural history, astronomy, and earth science; and to assist in the care and maintenance of resources (including animals, buildings, trails, and equipment) for these programs and activities.

The Education Naturalist is held accountable by the Senior Naturalist for designing and implementing educational and entertainment programs and exhibits for both children and adults.

Responsibilities:

  • The incumbent conducts research, develops program outlines, recruits and trains education volunteers and carries out and evaluates educational activities at the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium and at a variety of sites in Southwest Florida. 
  • Other responsibilities of the Naturalist include assisting in the care and maintenance of living resources. 
  • The Naturalist ensures that all necessary buildings, animals, trails, and equipment are available and in good condition. 
  • The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that all Natural History and Planetarium operations are in compliance with government regulations and that all internal operations such as record keeping and cash handling are performed to internal procedures. 
  • The Education Naturalist serves as an ambassador for the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium, supporting and conducting efforts to raise visibility, membership and funds.

Accountabilities:

  • design and implement natural history, astronomy, and earth science education exhibits and programs; 
  • ensure that resources necessary for natural history and planetarium operations are acquired and maintained in good working order; 
  • maintain visibility and strengthen the image of the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium by serving as a community resource for natural history and astronomy issues by carrying out positive community relation's activities; 
  • provide other operational support services for Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium programs as requested by the Senior Naturalist.

Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree in environmental education or a related field or equivalent training and knowledge, preferably with teaching experience; strong organizational, problem solving, teaching, and computer skills; ability to work with effectively both independently and as a team player; willingness and capability to work irregular hours; cheerful and outgoing demeanor.
