Description

The mission of the Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) is to encourage young people to pursue academic disciplines related to the Great Lakes (particularly the sciences) and to promote public understanding and stewardship toward the Great Lakes and global freshwater resources. ISEA operates three sailing vessels as science and heritage classrooms and is expanding its experiential education programs into the Inland Seas Education Center in Suttons Bay, Michigan.

The Education Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Education Director in developing, implementing and overseeing ISEA's educational programs.

The Education Coordinator will:

1. Assist with the development and implementation of shipboard and shoreside curriculum for schools, teachers, youth, government agencies and the general public.
2. Lead half-day, full-day and overnight education programs for students of all ages.
3. Train, supervise and evaluate volunteer instructors.
4. Prepare instructional materials including printed and electronic formats.
5. Assist in the evaluation of ISEA's education programs.
6. Monitor the equipment and supplies needed for ISEA's education programs, including inventory, acquisition, maintenance and repair of science equipment.
7. Maintain ISEA's science database.
8. Prepare manuals, reports, proposals and news releases.
9. Make presentations at conferences and meetings.
10. Assist with marketing strategies for ISEA programs.
11. Promote the work of ISEA to the media and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Advanced degree in science, education or environment-related field.
2. Experience in curriculum development and teaching youth and adults with an experiential education emphasis.
3. Strong knowledge of Great Lakes related science and environmental issues.
4. Excellent written, verbal and computer communication skills.
5. Excellent interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills. Able to work effectively with students, professional staff and volunteers.
6. Experience aboard education, research or sail-training vessels.
7. Able to work in adverse outdoor conditions aboard ships (rain, cold, rough seas).
8. Able to lift sampling equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, throw and haul on lines as needed aboard sailing vessels.
9. Able to travel away from office site for 1 to 10 days. Some weekend and evening hours are required.
10. Must possess a valid driver's license.
11. Must pass pre-employment criminal background check.
12. Must pass DOT pre-employment drug test and take part in ISEA's drug testing program.
13. Must possess or obtain current CPR and First Aid certificates.

The Education Coordinator will receive an annual salary of $35,000, health/dental benefits, two weeks of paid vacation and eight paid holidays. A retirement plan is available after two years of full-time employment.
