Thurston County Solid Waste is the county's waste prevention and recycling resource. We provide community education, technical assistance, and resources to help people reduce waste. Solid Waste also operates the Waste and Recovery Center at Hawks Prairie and drop box sites at Rainier and Rochester. All locations also have a recycle center.
Our mission is to promote waste prevention and sustainable resource use in Thurston County through education, technical assistance, and community building. And our vision is to see a future in which everyone in Thurston County makes informed and responsible choices about what we produce and consume, so that every day our community creates less waste.
We are responsible for the design, construction, maintenance, and improvement of more than 1,000 miles of county roadway, and adjacent right of way. Our operating budget comes from a variety of sources, including grants,a portion of property and gas taxes and permit fees.
Position Overview:
Thurston County Solid Waste is seeking to fill the Education and Outreach Specialist I position. This role provides technical assistance, education and outreach for solid waste reduction programs.
Responsibilities:
- Develops specific strategies, using social marketing and behavior change theory, to identify and reach target groups with a goal of increased awareness and participation.
- Implements, revises, coordinates and evaluates programs and outreach plans to ensure maximum effectiveness.
- Gathers, catalogues, and tracks program-supporting data and information.
- Conducts research and identifies emerging and changing issues and makes recommendations to management for program and policy improvements.
- Develops, updates, and revises informational and educational materials.
- Establishes and fosters cooperative relationships with community partners.
- Conducts presentations, workshops, and "train the trainer" sessions in a group or individual setting.
- Coordinates and staffs special events and public area recycling.
- Recruits, trains, mentors, and supervises volunteers and interns.
- Assists with budget development, contracts and grant proposals.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's Degree in education, public health, environmental health, environmental science, or other closely related field.
- Additional experience can be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
- Must have three years' experience working in public health, environmental issues, or other related field promoting education, outreach, media campaign, public relations or other comparable experiences to successfully perform duties and responsibilities of classification.
- Must have the ability to utilize a personal computer with related software to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Current Washington State Driver's License or have requested and obtained an appropriate accommodation.
- Experience with writing for the general public, designing outreach materials, and providing presentations.
- Volunteer coordination and community building.
- Video production, web design and proficiency with Adobe software.
