Sustainable San Mateo County (SSMC) is dedicated to the long-term health of our county's economy, environment and social equity by educating about sustainability.
Every year SSMC publishes an indicators report aimed at raising awareness of sustainability issues in our county and improving our ability to make sound decisions for the benefit of future generations. It is the only countywide report that tracks major economic, social, and environmental issues in one document.
In addition to publishing the indicators report, SSMC hosts an annual Sustainability Awards program to recognize San Mateo County businesses, community groups, and individuals that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to bringing sustainable practices to their work.
SSMC Goals:
- Provide fact-based information about San Mateo County's economy, environment, and society.
- Educate the community about sustainability.
- Bring the concepts of sustainability into the mainstream of decision-making county-wide.
- Contribute to the long-term improvement of our economy, environment, and social equity.
Position Summary:
SSMC's Education Director conducts outreach that educates the community about sustainability and SSMC's annual indicators report. The position is part-time.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop, schedule, and make presentations to civic and community groups.
- Develop handouts for presentations and community events
- Expand indicator report use to colleges and schools
- Consult on production of web and newsletter
- Edit communications where necessary
- Plan and execute public relations strategy for annual release of the indicators report
- Assist with writing of grant proposals
- Attend and participate in Board and Committee meetings where required
- Coordinate development of marketing collateral
- Assist with development program and fundraising efforts
Skills Required:
- Knowledge of sustainability concepts
- Experience with Powerpoint
- Experience giving public presentations
- Good oral and written communications skills
Skills Preferred:
- Experience with fundraising software.
- Knowledge of Sustainable San Mateo County
Location:
The Education Director works as an independent contractor and may work from a home office. Presentations are given in various locations in San Mateo County.
Hours and Compensation:
This is a contract, part-time position, between 40-50 hrs/month, without benefits. Compensation is $30+/hr, commensurate with experience.
