Position Overview 

The Editorial Director at the New England Aquarium manages content production for print publications, website, social media and also main building exhibits. This content promotes the Aquarium's environmental mission and delivers a compelling retail message.

The Editorial Director thinks creatively and collaborates closely with a team of writers, editors, designers, public relations experts and marketing professionals under the leadership of the Aquarium's Vice President of Marketing and Communications to ensure high quality and consistent work for all of the Aquarium's print and online materials. The Editorial Director will be the driving force behind strategic communication goals and the implementation of social media plans.

Key characteristics and experience for the position include: superior writing and editing skills, excellent organizational and oral communication skills, ability to manage pressure, meet deadlines, ability to work independently as well as quickly and efficiently. Strong management and mentoring skills are required as is interest and fluency in social media platforms. Additionally, a strong editorial background in, or a passion for, ocean conservation would be a plus.

Responsibilities 

Essential Functions: 

  • Collaborates with colleagues within the department and throughout the Aquarium to deliver strategic and impactful messaging. 
  • Produces high quality editorial content and possess strong editing skills. Ensure that message direction of all copy is aligned to brand strategy.
  • Approaches projects with both a strategic and creative mindset and consistently seeks to find innovative ways to improve the end product.
  • Works both as an individual contributor and team leader to develop diverse content varying from exhibit/scientific to marketing/social media.
  • Develops strategy for, and oversees implementation for social media content on existing social networks with attention to emerging technologies and platforms.
  • Develops strong collaborative partnerships throughout the organization to ensure that the best content emerges to present the Aquarium both as an important Boston cultural institution and global leader in ocean conservation.
  • Articulates concepts and presents editorial work to both internal and external clients.
  • Mentors and leads a small team of writers and editors.
  • Leads the direction of our social media and web presence. 

Qualifications 

Minimum Training and Experience: 

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 8-10 years of editorial and management experience. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills. 
  • Organized, with a meticulous attention to detail. 
  • Must work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
