Position Overview:
RMI is seeking a senior-level hire to expand its voice through the creation of an increasing body of high quality written content for diverse audiences. She/he will collaborate with staff throughout the organization-in communications, research and collaboration (our initiative teams), and elsewhere-in the identification and shaping of creative, compelling stories for diverse media, with a strong emphasis on our written materials. She/he will ensure that written materials under the RMI brand excel in clarity, grace, purpose, precision, and appeal and will work to improve the writing skills of staff.
This person will have intense curiosity regarding RMI's work and will write and edit materials supporting our programmatic goals in the 4 energy sectors-transportation, buildings, industry, and electricity-writing significantly personally, and coaching and editing the work of others. She/he will have expertise in communicating complex topics to technical and business audiences and will also be adept at distilling the key concepts to general audiences. She/he will manage the production of RMI's annual report and frequent blogs and will write and edit extensively for them as well as other materials including marketing collateral and research and collaboration (our initiative work) products such as white papers and semi-technical and technical articles.
She/he will have extensive experience (10+ years) writing and editing and a passion for sharing RMI's viewpoint with diverse audiences-including general, business, and technical-at the appropriate level of depth.
It is our very strong preference to locate this position in Snowmass. This hire reports to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications and manages a writer / editor located in Boulder.
Responsibilities:
- Improve quality of written communications from across the organization
- Review and edit all written materials for public release
- Manage production process and write / edit materials for annual report and RMI's blog, RMI Outlet
- Write and edit numerous materials in addition to those above such as marketing collateral, articles, and research and collaboration products
- Improve breadth and depth of writing skills across RMI, including identifying and implementing programs and processes as needed
- Manage writer / editor who is located in Boulder
- Partner with Communications staff-and staff throughout the organization-in creating powerful, audience-specific stories utilizing various media including blogs, videos, infographics, and podcasts
- Source written content across our work areas, both by creating it personally and by facilitating others to do so
- Make RMI as admired for its writing as for its content
- Coach staff on writing, both on specific products and through regular clinics
- Actively participate in the development of the communications team strategy
- Other duties as assigned / identified
Qualifications:
- An intense drive to produce top-quality written products and to help permeate that commitment and skill throughout RMI's culture
- Bachelor's Degree or more, ideally liberal-arts
- 10+ years' experience as writer / editor, including extensive experience writing for business, technical, and general audiences
- Experience writing copy for marketing collateral strongly desired
- Exceptional writing and editing skills from document structure to grammatical precision
- Expert knowledge of Chicago style
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Experience writing on energy-related issues preferred
- Experience integrating the editorial and production processes
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Strong initiative and follow-through, workflow, and project management skills
- A strong team player with excellent interpersonal / collaborative skills with staff at all organizational levels
- Intense passion for RMI's mission
