Position Overview:

Opportunity to apply and develop technical writing and document formatting skills as Full-Time editor for a wide range of environmental documents, including postcards, flyers, correspondence, annual reports, newsletters, and a variety of other smaller products. The editor will also occasionally be assigned larger environmental documents (e.g., environmental assessment) or portions of more complex documents (e.g., environmental impact statement, wilderness plan).

Editing work will range from correcting grammar and spelling (copy editing), to rewriting/ reorganizing text and document organization (substantive editing), to working with project managers to produce copy text (writing).

Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • 2 to 5 years of editing and document formatting experience
  • Comprehensive understanding of Microsoft Word, including advanced features such as developing and manipulating tables, inserting footers and headers, placing graphics within documents, bookmarking, and preparing tables of contents, and creating automatic indexes. The editor should have sufficient skills to take rough copy to a "camera-ready" draft ready for printing. All work will be performed in a PC (non-Apple) environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of English usage, including grammar, diction, style, organization, and idea development; thorough knowledge of writing and editing principles, methods, and practices; ability to write original material and to synthesize, organize, rewrite, refine, format, and edit rough-draft material while maintaining the integrity of ideas.

Desired Qualifications:

The following experience, skills, and knowledge are preferred:

  • Familiarity with/knowledgeable of Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition.
  • Advanced knowledge of personal computers systems (PC platforms) and a thorough understanding of writing/editing electronic software (Microsoft Word), two-column page formatting, and able to insert graphics and photos, and working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat and Excel.
  • Proficiency in communicating, orally and in writing, to work as a member of a planning team, and be able to help team members gain consensus for wording of specific and sensitive topics, explanations, or descriptions.
  • Functional knowledge or the ability to quickly gain a functioning knowledge of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA); National Park Service (NPS) guidelines and management policies, including pertinent directors orders relating to NEPA and historic preservation compliance; the NPS messaging program; and the Denver Service Center (DSC) Editing Manual.
  • Familiarity with environmental technical language.
  • Knowledge of team building skills and techniques such as problem solving, interpersonal communication, and maintaining a liaison with the project manager.
  • Thorough understanding of best practices, appropriate labor hours, and level of effort necessary to edit documents and ability to realistically estimate writing and editing workloads.
