ONLINE NEWS SERVICE SEEKS ENTREPRENEURIAL EDITOR

Tidepool Editor Reports to:  Tidepool Board of Directors 

Location:  Telecommute, though applicant must be located in Oregon or Washington 

Application Deadline:  September 15, 2005 

Tidepool.org, an online news service covering the environment, economy, and culture of the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, British Columbia, and northern California, seeks an entrepreneurial journalist to direct its editorial team and manage its business affairs. 

Roles and Responsibilities: 

Editorial duties (approx 25 hours/week) include: 

*  Search and select articles from 60 news websites for inclusion in Tidepool's webpages and emails, three mornings per week.
*  Rank news articles and index them by topic.
*  Prepare and send daily email of top Tidepool stories
*  Format and post original content from guest writers and commentators
*  Format and send weekly email summary of news stories
*  Write weekly editorial column on top news story of the week
*  Cull outdated addresses from Tidepool email lists
*  Respond to mail from readers. 

Management duties (approx 15 hours/week) include: 

*  Coordinate the work of Tidepool's associate editors, who post news to the site twice weekly.
*  Maintain business relationships with Tidepool's paying clients, who receive customized news from Tidepool via email or web.
*  Solicit new clients for these custom services, and solicit contracts for business underwriters ("Today's Tidepool brought to you in part by...")
*  Maintain relationships with foundation donors, and solicit new sources of philanthropic support.
*  Conduct twice-yearly pledge drives to solicit donations from readers.
*  Compile annual budgets for submission to board of directors, and oversee bookkeeping.
*  Work with board chair to convene meetings of the board of directors and report to board on Tidepool's operations.
*  Keep in contact with technical reps from the organizations hosting Tidepool's digital operations, and work with them to ensure continuity of service.
*  Supervise the addition of new features to Tidepool, overseeing contractors responsible for graphic design and programming. 

Qualifications: 

The successful applicant will have: 

*  At least 3 years' journalism experience as an editor, reporter, freelance writer or wire editor
*  Solid news judgment, with familiarity of Pacific Northwest issues and experience with regional environmental issues a plus
*  Ability to work under deadline pressure during early morning hours
*  A dedication to the mission of Tidepool: to promote better understanding of environmental, social and economic issues in western North America and to improve the quality of information, news and analysis available to opinion leaders, decision-makers, citizens and consumers throughout the region.
*  Fluid facility with the internet, including understanding of web design concepts and web-editing software. Ability to program and write in html and Cold Fusion desirable but not required.
*  Their own work setting, including computer, broadband internet connection, and telephone.
*  An entrepreneurial nature and can-do attitude.
*  Understanding of basic accounting concepts.
*  Previous management and fundraising experience is desirable, but not required. 

Compensation: 

In the lower half of the 30s, depending on experience.
