Build It Green is a professional non-profit membership organization whose mission is to promote healthy, energy and resource-efficient buildings in California. Supported by a solid foundation of outreach and education, Build It Green connects consumers and building professionals with the tools and technical expertise they need to build quality green buildings.
Position Overview:
Build It Green seeks a Division Director to establish a Build It Green satellite office in Southern California and expand Build It Green programs in the region.
Key priorities will be to expand the presence of GreenPoint Rated and Build It Green Professional Training programs and extend the Build It Green network of councils and guilds. The Division Director reports directly to the Executive Director.
Responsibilities:
This position requires a flexible schedule, as some responsibilities involve evening and weekend activities. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following:
1. Provide strategic planning support to the Executive Director and Board of Directors and develop program implementation plans.
2. Manage Division Office finances in coordination with the Build It Green Bookkeeper and within the parameters of Board budget approvals.
3. Lead organizational development and fundraising in Southern California; establish development goals and set fundraising priorities; support cultivation of key funder relationships; coordinate with the Development Director to prepare grant proposals and contracts.
4. Optimize the deployment of staff and financial resources for maximum strategic impact in Southern California.
5. Create stakeholder outreach plan and work with Executive Director to actively engage stakeholders as strategic partners and green building change agents; recruit Build It Green sponsors, members, and program participants; build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders and strategic partners.
6. Coordinate with the Government Relations Manager to provide on-the-ground support for government outreach and Public Agency Council chapters in the Los Angeles Basin and San Diego County, including recruiting new participants and providing follow-up technical support and training assistance.
7. Coordinate with the GreenPoint Rated Manager to provide on-the-ground support for builder outreach and the Builders Council in Southern California, including recruiting new participants and coordinating with local Building Industry Association chapters.
8. Manage Build It Green's remaining Council chapters in Southern California, including recruiting new participants, providing strategic direction, and managing administrative support functions.
9. Coordinate with Build It Green's professional training and technical staff to organize training for building professionals, local government staff, and other target audiences.
10. Help craft marketing and PR messages and raise Build It Green's media visibility in Southern California.
Qualifications:
1. Hands-on experience (either public-sector or private-sector) in the residential building industry in Southern California; thorough understanding of business and regulatory decision-making processes.
2. Proven communication plan development and implementation skills.
3. Proven ability to navigate among divergent political interests and manage relationships with competing political partisans in a professional, ethical, and nonpartisan manner.
4. Proficient organizational and strategic skills.
5. Strong writing, public speaking, and interpersonal communication skills; friendly, outgoing nature and an eagerness to serve Build It Green clients, partners, and the public interest.
6. Experience in budget management.
7. Knowledge of green building design, construction strategies, technologies and materials and the ability to articulate the environmental, health, and economic benefits of green building.
8. Self-sufficient office skills: ability to work with MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and Windows operating systems. Access (or other database) experience is preferred.
9. A proven commitment to addressing a variety of environmental and public health issues through green building and an appetite to learn more about the rapidly evolving field.
Education & Background:
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in related field AND at least 10 years of progressively increasing responsibility related to duties similar to those described for this position.
