Description

~ The mission of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation is to conserve, protect, enhance and advocate wise use of the commonwealth's unique natural, historical, recreational and scenic cultural resources. ~ 

Position Overview 

We are seeking to fill the positon of District Resource Management Assistant, Natural Resource Spec. II. This position will assist the District Resource Specialist with implementation of resource management projects across State Park District 5, which includes Claytor Lake, Fairy Stone, Occoneechee, Smith Mountain Lake, Staunton River, and Staunton River Battlefield State Parks.

The position will be based at Staunton River State Park in Halifax County, Virginia. Position will require daily travel and occasional overnight travel. 

Responsibilities  

Primary duties will be to assist resource management staff in performing forest management activities including: 

  • Timber cruising;
  • Timber evaluation;
  • Boundary marking;
  • Surveying;
  • Vegetation surveys;
  • Permanent monitoring plot establishment; and
  • Long term land management planning and implementation. 

Qualifications 

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, to perform strenuous work in an outdoor forest environment.
  • Knowledge of regional tree/non-woody plant species and ecosystems, and tree species identification strongly recommended.
  • Knowledge and experience in use of forest measurement tools including Biltmore stick, clinometers, diameter tape and compass.
  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment such as tractors, skid steer, chainsaw, etc, is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of GIS/GPS equipment and mapping software, ESRI ArcMap 10 is an advantage.
  • VA Pesticide Applicator`s License or Registered Technician Certification License preferred. License will need to be obtained if not currently licensed.
  • NWCG fire fighter crew level certification preferred. Certification will need to be obtained within 12 months.
  • Prefer a Bachelor`s degree in natural resources or related field or relative experience.
  • Valid Drivers license is required.

Note: Employees are limited to working no more than 1500 hours in 12 months from May 1 to April 30. Position does not include benefits.

Compensation: Hiring range is $13.50 - $15.00 depending on qualifications and experience.
