Description

PURPOSE: To manage the development, implementation, and refinement of environmentally sustainable operations on the campus of the Chicago Botanic Garden, and to communicate the Garden's practices to the public, peer institutions, and the larger green community at the local, national, and international levels. 

RESPONSIBLITIES: 

1. Direct the implementation of target sustainable practice standards in all Garden operations in consultation with the Garden's senior leadership. 

2. Research, evaluate, and prioritize alternative practices that will support the Garden's sustainability goals, including those identified in the Garden's recently completed environmental audit. 

3. Continually monitor and review operating practices to ensure compliance with target standards, conduct ongoing data collection for internal evaluation of compliance, and benchmark the Garden's "green" practices against leading national and international examples. 

4. Work with all Garden departments to identify additional sustainable practices, innovations, product sourcing, and staff/visitor behavioral changes that can improve the overall environmental sensitivity of the Garden's operations. 

5. Advise and provide information to support green design and construction standards for capital projects at the Garden. 

6. Provide institutional leadership to develop annual operating goals and strategic directions for the sustainable campus operations program. 

7. Work with appropriate Garden staff to develop internal and external communications for a variety of audiences that explain and showcase the Garden's sustainability initiative and practices. 

8. Chair a campus-wide committee that will help monitor practices in all work areas. 

9. Be a campus spokesperson on the issue of green practices used at the Garden, and be chief liaison between the Garden and peer institutions as well as city and suburban green operations programs. 

10. Serve as a partner in fundraising efforts for the Garden's conservation and sustainable practices by meeting with potential donors and assisting the Garden's Development department in grant-writing efforts. 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum requirements for this position include a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in public administration, environmental science or related field, and five years of progressively responsible experience in a similar scope of accountability. Candidates should be able to demonstrate significant knowledge of sustainability concepts, regulatory compliance, policy and program development, and measures that effectively reduce environmental impacts in operations. Candidate's work history should reflect success in creating and managing new programs, collaborating with government and non-profit agencies on environmental issues, and excellent communication skills.
