Director, Sustainability

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Vice President, National Real Estate Services, the incumbent will focus on the development and execution of property sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability plans and programs.

Responsibilities:

• Champion the advancement of Bentall's property services Sustainability Strategy, working with VP Operations across the company.
• Develop & implement sustainable property programs and lead green initiatives that are in keeping with the company's goal to maintain a leadership role in the real estate industry in sustainable best practices that support responsible property management principles.
• Lead and manage cross-functional project teams to execute sustainable programs and initiatives.
• Assist with establishing sustainability policies and programs that aim to minimize the environmental impact of our operations and develop appropriate best practices.
• Assist in the development of clear, measurable sustainability performance indicators and facilitate periodic progress reporting to relevant stakeholders.
• Working with the Director, National Real Estate Services develop and update green specifications and work with suppliers and providers to ensure progression of green procurement programs.
• Contribute to site level green building certification efforts as required at a tactical level and develop national programs that are aligned to facilitate certification efforts (ie. LEED and BOMA BESt).
• Establish and maintain meaningful contact networks so as to remain current on real estate industry and Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability (CSRS) trends in general.
• Lead and manage company sustainability committees for different property types (office, retail, industrial).
• Develop a communication strategy for property sustainability initiatives to stakeholders (tenants, clients, community, employees, service providers) consistent with our ForeverGreen brand, including lunch & learns and training sessions.
• Chair the corporate CSRS Committee to develop and champion initiatives to achieve objectives and reports to the CSRS Committee on the effectiveness of the CSRS initiatives.
• Develop an employee CSRS engagement strategy and coordinate activities in cooperation with Human Resources consistent with our Caught Green Handed brand, including lunch & learns and training sessions.
• Work with Director, Communications to ensure consistency in company communication strategies that highlight all CSRS and property sustainability programs.
• Manage the activities of external consultants and contractors utilized to execute sustainable initiatives.
• Develop budgets and manage costs associated with sustainable program and initiatives.
• Maintain and own company Sustainability and CSR portal sites.
• Work with Bentall's leasing, development and acquisition groups to assist with development of green standards and best practices.
• Be a resource and ambassador for all company divisions in the area of sustainability.
• Work with internal stakeholders/employees to promote a culture of involvement and personal responsibility that support triple bottom line principles - "people, planet, profit".
• Engages and recommends to senior management on issues related to broad scope of sustainability and corporate social responsibility.

Qualifications:

• Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Environmental Management or a related discipline.
• 5+ years of management experience in the area of environmental sustainability, preferably in the real estate industry.
• Solid written, verbal communication & presentation skills.
• Proficient in project planning/management.
• Strong prioritization and organizational skills with an ability to handle multiple initiatives simultaneously.
• Experience and confidence working with/presenting to senior leaders and clients.
• Ability to be productive and display good judgment in an environment with a high degree of ambiguity.
• Demonstrated leadership and team-building skills
• Bilingualism (English/French) an asset.
