The Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI) conducts research and development relating to the generation, delivery and use of electricity for the benefit of the public. An independent, nonprofit organization, EPRI brings together its scientists and engineers as well as experts from academia and industry to help address challenges in electricity, including reliability, efficiency, health, safety and the environment.

Position Overview:

The Director, Renewable Energy is responsible for leading the development and implementation of EPRI's strategic goals and growth objectives for its Renewable Energy research, consisting of generation technologies, grid integration and energy storage, and environmental aspects.  EPRI's renewable energy research is housed in 3 R&D Sectors: Environment, Generation and Power Delivery and Utilization, and the Director will work with all 3 Sector Vice Presidents to ensure an integrated approach to EPRI's research programs.   

Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning:

  • Lead the development and execution of a single, Institute-wide Renewable Energy research vision and strategic plan, and issue-specific roadmaps.
  • Work with technical staff to ensure that ongoing and new Renewable Energy research programs and projects align with both individual Sector strategic plans as well as the Institute-wide strategic plan for renewables.
  • Assess and integrate knowledge of current and potential future renewable energy-related events and issues into a coherent strategic perspective, and advise EPRI leadership accordingly.
  • Work with R&D, Marketing, and Technical Advisory Services staff to ensure impact and relevance of Renewable Energy programs and projects.

Business Development:

  • Lead Institute-wide efforts to achieve Renewable Energy membership and funding goals, including international and service-related activities.
  • Identify emerging renewable energy issues for EPRI and its members, and work with technical staff to develop new project opportunities that address these issues.
  • Collect and analyze intelligence gained from Institute-wide interaction with members and potential members to identify new project opportunities and research needs.
  • Lead outreach and development of relationships with potential members and partners for new collaborative renewable energy research projects and programs, including, but not limited to, Federal agencies, National Laboratories, universities, trade associations, environmental NGOs, financial institutions and renewable energy vendors.

Thought Leadership:

  • Increase the visibility and impact of EPRI Renewable Energy research activities among the renewable energy community, media, decision-makers, and the public.
  • Work with the technical staff to ensure that EPRI Renewable Energy research results are easily accessible, communicated clearly, and converted into value for members.
  • Represent EPRI in relevant U.S. and international forums to establish EPRI as a trusted source of scientific and technical information on renewable energy issues.

Management:

  • Manage the activities of EPRI's Renewable Energy Council, the advisory body established to provide guidance and priorities for EPRI's Renewable Energy work.
  • Lead regular Institute-wide coordination meetings involving all EPRI staff working on Renewable Energy, to ensure a single, integrated approach to Renewables research.
  • Coordinate any Technology Innovation programs or projects related to renewable energy, including Strategic Programs, Polaris, or Innovation Scout functions.
  • Ensure that all renewables operations and business interactions are conducted in a legal and ethical manner and are compliant with applicable law and EPRI company policy.

Qualifications:

Ideal Candidate:

  • Proven experience in managing multidisciplinary staff and contracted resources to deliver projects and assignments on time and with high quality
  • Demonstrated success at working with and the scientific and technical community at large to assess opportunities for new and innovative research projects
  • A record of creativity and entrepreneurship leading to technology or knowledge innovation with significant impact on the renewable energy sector.
  • Deep experience and contacts with the renewable energy community, preferably in an executive function with a research or membership-based organization.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including clarity and comfort with public speaking and technical presentations
  • Ability to communicate research issues, approaches, and findings with non-specialists as well as with scientists and industry executives
  • Willingness to travel for business development and outreach at least 50% of time

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Management, Economics, Public Policy, Environmental Science or related fields; an advanced degree is preferred

EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA).
