Position Overview:
The University of Iowa is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as Director of the Office of Sustainability (Assistant Director of Facilities Management).
This position will be an institutional advocate, coordinator and communicator for campus sustainability initiatives and efforts. The position will be housed in the department of Facilities Management, under the direction of the Associate Vice President and Director, Facilities Management, with reporting responsibility to the University of Iowa Sustainability Steering Committee.
Responsibilities:
- Drawing upon the university's established yet diverse work toward sustainability, start up and lead the University's Office of Sustainability;
- Coordinate strong established programs and develop new programs to promote sustainability and resource conservation;
- Lead or coordinate efforts to formulate institutional goals, policies, practices and measure progress;
- Develop reports and propose plans that respond to university and state requirements;
- Supervise staff and student members in the Office of Sustainability;
- Manage the operating budget for the office;
- Seek grants and other funding to financially support campus sustianability efforts;
- Enhance and enlarge the university community's understanding of the importance and feasibility of sustainability initiatives from an ecological and financial perspective;
- In conjunction with the academic enterprise, overseen by the Office of the Provost, serve as a connection point for campus sustainability information and networking including overseeing the program's public relations, communications and marketing;
- Also in consultation with the Office of the Provost serve as sustainability awareness educator for the university community, coordinating outreach and education projects, advising student organizations, participating in relevant workshops and conferences, delivering guest presentations in courses that address sustainability issues and contributing content on campus sustainability to University publications and media outreach;
- Facilitate or implement annual campus/community events.

Facilities Management is responsible for the planning, construction, operation, and maintenance of buildings, campus grounds, and utility systems on the University of Iowa Campus.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifictions:
- A Master's degree (additional years of related experience may be substituted for degree requirement) or extensive academic work in which the candidate has gained an understanding of the learning and discovery culture of higher education;
- Extensive (5-7 years) experience with environmental, energy conservation or sustainability-related programs; Demonstrated job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including careful listening;
- Demonstrated ability to add value to complex, collaborative projects already in motion and to propose, plan, administer and evaluate new projects.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in higher education setting, especially one with a strong culture of collaborative decision-making;
- Record of supervising team-based projects;
- Experience with writing and communication, including understanding of local media outlets such as public radio and TV, college radio, community and campus newspaper(s);
- Experience in research and synthesis of information related to campus sustainability using internet resources, print resources and human resources;
- Group facilitation and public speaking experience;
- Supervisory experience;
- Grant research, writing and implementation experience.
Compensation: Salary for this position is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salary range for this P&S paygrade 13 job classification is $55,767=minimum through $110,789=maximum.
