Position Overview

Phipps seeks a Director of Research and Science Education to advance and oversee all research, science education and science communication programs at Phipps.

The Director of Research and Science Education will lead in the development of the Phipps Research Institute for Biophilia and Science Engagement, focusing on original research in the fields of human and ecological health and wellness, education and social justice, and communication and outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Principle responsibilities will include conducting and publishing original research, as well as increasing collaborative efforts with research scientists in biophilia, ecology, sustainability, conservation, education, public health and psychology.
  • The Director of Research and Science Education will lead and manage a professional staff in conducting research and building cutting-edge programming to bring the science of nature to individuals of all education levels, with a strong emphasis on children, by using the botanic garden and other informal learning venues as platforms for imparting knowledge and inspiring behavior change.

Qualifications

  • The qualified candidate must be a professional, highly motivated and reliable individual with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • A Ph.D. in eco or environmental psychology, ecology or conservation-focused biological sciences, environmental social sciences or environmental education is required; a plant focus is preferred.
  • Relevant experience in the field of science education in an informal learning environment, along with experience supervising staff in a team environment while managing multiple simultaneous projects, is required.
