Located in Emeryville, CA, Scientific Certification Systems is a global leader in third-party environmental, sustainability and food quality certification, auditing, testing and standards development.   We are a highly reputable, well established company in the sustainability industry and are positioned for significant growth.  We are currently looking for a talented, creative and media savvy individual to join our team.

Position Overview: 

Working in conjunction with the leadership team, the Director of Public Relations is responsible for planning and executing a multi-dimensional PR strategy designed to increase the overall brand awareness of SCS, its mission and products.  This position is based in Emeryville, CA.
 
Responsibilities:  

  • Working in conjunction with the leadership team, the Director of Public Relations is responsible for planning and executing a multi-dimensional PR strategy designed to increase the overall brand awareness of SCS, its mission and products.
  • Conduct needs assessment; identify opportunities to promote the SCS brand.
  • Recommend PR strategy and activities to promote product launches and branding efforts.
  • Partner with the executive team to ensure that the global PR strategy is aligned with corporate strategy, and take responsibility for the plan to execute.
  • Collaborate in development of key messaging for company and products.
  • Collaborate with Marketing Communications team in managing messages across multiple media channels.
  • Foster relationships with key business, industry and mainstream press, bloggers and influencers; maintain regular contact as well as outreach for specific initiatives.
  • Provide media training, coaching and messaging support to company spokespeople.
  • Direct publicity through press releases, media relations, social media, events, collateral, and other PR initiatives that reach enthusiastic and appropriate media (print, online, etc.).
  • Research, write, and edit press materials including press releases and supporting collateral
  • Develop and assist with development of presentations.
  • Respond to media inquiries in a timely and professional manner; working with appropriate internal teams to craft appropriate responses.
  • Track and measure and PR success.
  • Report regularly to company and leadership team on media activities, coverage, opportunities, successes and press feedback.
  • Plan, budget, and review PR initiatives regularly.
  • Promote success stories through traditional channels such as press events as well as online channels to varied audiences including customers, press, and analysts.

Qualifications:

  • 15+ years public relations experience, combination of agency and in-house
  • Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or other relevant field.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in providing PR services related to sustainability issues and CSR.
  • Strong planning and project management skills.
  • Exceptional writing skills.
  • Willing, ready and able to be hands-on in development of written content and collateral.  
  • Ability to work well under pressure and able to manage multiple projects and priorities in a highly dynamic environment.
  • Well-developed professional communication and presentation skills, able to adjust communication style appropriately for various audiences. 
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify key metrics, manage to such metrics, assess and report on ROI/results.
  • Strong social business and social media skills.

The ideal candidate will be able to turn highly complex, technical information into compelling content for press releases, presentation material, and marketing collateral.  A passion for the environment and a flexible, collaborative work style will also be critical for success in this role.
