The Charles River Conservancy, founded in 2000, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit citizens advocacy group dedicated to the renewal and stewardship of the Charles River Parklands from Boston Harbor to the Watertown Dam. The Conservancy works in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), the agency responsible for the Charles River parklands, parkways, and historic bridges.
Position Overview:
The Charles River Conservancy seeks an individual to oversee 3 important projects: 1) Skatepark; 2) Swimmable Charles; and 3) Active Parklands. For more information about the specific projects, see our website.
The Director of Projects will be the key coordinator of our important strategic relationship with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), manager of the Charles River Parklands. S/he will shape policy discussions with DCR so that we can execute our agenda effectively. The successful candidate will be highly organized, an excellent communicator, a dynamic self-starter who manages people and processes with sophistication and subtlety, and who possesses strong leadership and management skills.
Responsibilities:
For the Skatepark Project, the Director will:
- Serve as the client representative for the Skatepark Project.
- Organize and facilitate meetings.
- Manage the project budget and schedule.
- Communicate effectively with the Skatepark team, DCR, the CRC Board of Directors, project funders, and the public.
For the Swimmable Charles Project, the Director will:
- Staff the Charles River Water Quality Commission, as established by the legislature.
- Solicit proposals from consultants to conduct sediment sampling and analysis
- Work with the DCR and other stakeholders to establish a program of public swim events at existing docks on the Charles River.
- Manage the project budget and schedule.
- Help secure funding for the Swimmable Charles Initiative.
- Communicate effectively with the Governor appointed Commission, DCR, the CRC Board, sub-contractors, partners, project funders, and the public.
For the Active Parklands, the Director will:
- Develop new projects and program opportunities for expanding recreational activities
- Work with committee on specific advocacy efforts and outreach
- Oversee staff for the Sunday Parklands Games
- Help secure funding for this program
- Communicate effectively with DCR, the CRC board, partners, and the public.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher
- At least 5 years of professional experience with complex projects, expense tracking, and client representation
- Ability to work both independently and in a dynamic team environment
- Highly motivated and able to motivate others (including interns and volunteers)
- Ability to prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and meet deadlines
- Excellent writing skills; graphic skills a plus
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Experience at making presentations
- Ability to use Microsoft office and to navigate in both PC and Mac environments
