DU got its start in 1937 during the Dust Bowl when North America's drought-plagued waterfowl populations had plunged to unprecedented lows. Determined not to sit idly by as the continent's waterfowl dwindled beyond recovery, a small group of sportsmen joined together to form an organization that became known as Ducks Unlimited. Its mission: habitat conservation.
Position Overview:
Ducks Unlimited is seeking an experienced conservation professional to support the national conservation program and supervise several staff positions at its headquarters in Memphis, TN. This position provides direct support to the Chief Conservation Officer and serves on the Conservation Leadership Team (CLT) which leads implementation of conservation elements of DU's Strategic Plan and National Business Plan. The CLT consists of colleagues in planning, policy, and science as well as the Directors of Operation.
Candidates should have solid organizational skills, be excellent at oral and written communication, an outstanding partner in accomplishing overall organizational objectives, and have demonstrated collaborative and analytical skills. The director must have knowledge of wetland and waterfowl conservation and be able to work effectively with internal and external partners.
Responsibilities:
Specific Duties
- Support the Conservation Programs Committee (volunteer leadership committee guiding DU's conservation work)
- Serve as staff position to the North American Wetlands Conservation Council
- Develop agendas for CLT meetings and provide follow-up to ensure positive meeting results
- Support national budget and lands functions
- Coordinate and facilitate national projects and initiatives
- Liaison to other departments (Fundraising, Communications, etc.) within DU
- Lead DU Convention and Board meeting preparation for Conservation Program
- Supervise conservation specialist and administrative assistant in support of entire team
- Provide input to national issues in support of strategic and business planning
Qualifications:
- B.S. in a conservation field or field that would prepare the person for the position (advanced degree preferred)
- At least 6 years of experience in conservation with leadership capabilities
- Demonstrated professional path towards waterfowl conservation leadership
- Travel required
