Since 2004, Sustainable Tompkins has been a leader in laying the groundwork for the transition to a resilient local economy, healthy environment, and strong social fabric.   We act as convener, connector, and catalyst to engage both the grassroots and policymakers in the work of redesigning how we work and live so that our community can successfully cope with global influences such as climate change and energy descent.

Sustainable Tompkins hopes to provide the hub and spokes for a community sustainability movement that protects the long-term well-being of our region.  We advocate a systems approach to build the infrastructure and social capacity for more sustainable ways of living and working.  Projects and programs have focused on energy efficiency, climate protection, green purchasing, sustainable community development, green collar jobs, sustainable enterprise, greening heath care, and economic/ecological justice. 

We are a nonprofit corporation, and Social Ventures, Inc. is acting as our 501(c)3 fiscal agent until our application for charity status is approved.

Position Overview:

Sustainable Tompkins is searching for a Director of Operations to provide experienced leadership in small nonprofit fundraising, marketing, financial management, and general administration.  We are offering flexible, part-time work with good benefits, and a leadership role in the local sustainability movement.??

Responsibilities:

The Operations Director will oversee all administrative functions of the organization and be responsible for developing a fundraising and outreach program.  Distribution of duties includes:

  1. Fundraising (45%): membership recruitment, donor and sponsor cultivation, special events, grantwriting for operations, donor database management.
  2. Marketing (25%): website and social media management, preparation of monthly newsletter, brochures and exhibits, fundraising materials.
  3. Financial Management (20%): budget development, quarterly and annual reports, supervise bookkeeper.
  4. Office Management (10%): software/hardware, supplies, phone and mail, organizational records, tenant/landlord relations.

The Operations Director will work closely with the Program Director and report jointly to the Board of Directors as part of a collaborative management structure. 

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have fundraising and marketing experience and familiarity with the technical tools needed for database management, budget development, and online marketing.??
  • We are looking for a creative and self-motivated person who supports our mission of taking personal and civic responsibility for creating a more sustainable community.

Compensation: 25,000 - 30,000 / $24/hr for 24 hrs/wk. The position is part-time (24 hrs/wk) and offers generous leave, health insurance, and retirement benefits.
