The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) is hiring a new Director of Membership and Communications to be based in its Washington, DC headquarters. Founded in 1990, TIES is the largest and oldest ecotourism organization in the world. It currently has members in more than 80 countries.

The organization’s membership includes academics, consultants, conservation professionals and organizations, governments, architects, tour operators, lodge owners and managers, general development experts, and ecotourists. As a non-governmental organization, TIES is unique in its efforts to provide guidelines and standards, training, technical assistance, research and publications to foster sound ecotourism development.

TIES is currently housed within a new policy research center, the Center on Ecotourism and Sustainable Development (CESD), which is jointly sponsored by the Institute for Policy Studies and Stanford University. Some of the TIES staff also work part time with CESD.

Duties:
The Director of Membership and Communications will be responsible for all aspects (administration, marketing, promotion, development and planning) of the TIES membership program, as well as for overseeing communications with TIES members and the general public, to help achieve the TIES mission and generate unrestricted funding for TIES.

  • Take the lead in membership and publications promotion, marketing, development and strategic planning 
  • Membership program planning, monitoring, evaluation and reporting 
  • Developing, managing and implementing all membership campaigns, specialized mailings, and membership benefits 
  • Where possible and appropriate attend trade shows and conferences for promoting membership 
  • Maintain on-line membership system and update as necessary 
  • Oversee the processing of membership applications by the admin assistant/interns 
  • Act as liaison with Ecotourism Societies/Associations around the world 
  • Conduct periodic membership communication and mailings; responding to membership queries 
  • Answer and field phone calls for general ecotourism information, book orders and membership applications 
  • Check and manage the general email account 
  • Coordinate newsletter production and distribution (quarterly and digital/monthly) 
  • Produce and update TIES promotional and informational materials (brochures, book catalogs), and maintain the website content up to date 
  • Maintain and update the TIES resource library (physical and on-line) and filing systems 
  • The Director of Membership and Communications will work closely with the rest of the TIES staff, especially the Executive Director, as well as the Director of Training and Education. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively is essential.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in relevant field 
  • At least 2 years experience in marketing, membership, sales, general tourism, public relations or related field 
  • Knowledge about ecotourism and sustainable tourism 
  • Excellent administration, management and organizational skills 
  • Extensive knowledge of computers – Office, especially database management (ACT) and internet 
  • Strong communication skills and excellent writing ability 
  • Fluency in English Skills desired/preferred: 
  • Working experience in tourism, ecotourism, international development or conservation 
  • Familiarity working internationally with diverse organizations, such as government, non profit, and the tourism industry is recommended 
  • Website development and management 
  • Web-based database development and management 
  • Working knowledge of Spanish and/or other languages 
  • Non-US citizens must have valid visas to work in the United States.

Terms:
Interviews: December 18-22

Start date: January 12 or earlier

Salary: Low $30’s
