Description

Bainbridge Graduate Institute is seeking an experienced development professional to manage a $3 million, three-year campaign focused on individual donors and foundations.

BGI, located on Bainbridge Island, Washington, offers a groundbreaking MBA in Sustainable Business that prepares entrepreneurs and managers to build economically successful businesses, initiatives and non-profits that help create healthy communities and safeguard the natural environment.

BGI is growing fast, approaching the third anniversary of its founding, and currently derives about half its revenue from programs and the other half from philanthropic sources. The organization is preparing its first development campaign and seeks senior staff leadership to ensure its success.

The Director of Development will direct the Institute's fundraising activities, including creating and implementing a strategy for ensuring adequate resources for BGI's education, outreach and research programs to supplement our earned program revenue. Duties include managing relations with individual donors and development of proposals to private foundations, businesses and other institutions. Fundraising goals are $50,000 per month in the current school year and $3 million by the conclusion of the three-year campaign in spring 2008.

This position will be half- to full-time, subject to negotiation during the hiring process. Candidates should be available to start no later than March 1, 2005, and preferably sooner. This position will report to the Executive Director.


RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Management
? Creating an annual fundraising strategy and budget for all development activities
? Leading foundation and major donor activities, and participating in cultivation and solicitation as appropriate
? Strengthening recognition of BGI's organizational identity by ensuring that fundraising materials are inspiring and memorable as well as conforming to institutional design guidelines
? Communicating fundraising goals, strategies and deadlines internally to the Board of Directors
? Working with BGI communications staff to coordinate with public relations activities and materials development
? Monitoring legal developments regarding fundraising and nonprofit management.
? Analyzing BGI financial reports (audits, board reports and project budgets) to monitor grant expenditures and progress toward fundraising goals
? Providing staff support to the Development Committee of the Board of Directors and the Friends of BGI
Project and Program Development
? Working with Executive Director, Marketing Director and academic administrators to develop program initiatives
? Preparing proposals and reports to foundations, government sources and companies
? Overseeing preparation of budgets and financial reports and supplementary materials for proposals and reports to foundations
? Strengthening, systematizing and supervising research and record-keeping, including computer records, prospect files and profiles

Individual Giving
? Working with staff and volunteers to build programs for annual giving, planned giving and endowment.
? Overseeing direct mail fundraising efforts, including conceptualizing appeals, drafting solicitations and response devices, marketing planned giving opportunities and reporting on outcomes
? Working with the Board of Directors to create its own development plan and assisting and supporting individual members in their fundraising efforts, including special events

Personal
? Promoting sustainable business education in entrepreneurial and creative ways
? Acting as an ambassador for the Institute at all times
? Contributing to an open, candid and mutually respectful working environment
? Utilizing intelligence and maturity to foster trust with Board members, donors, representatives of other organizations and colleagues at the Institute
? Articulating a vision for the future

Qualifications:
? Demonstrated flexibility to lead both high-level strategic planning and to ensure task completion with careful attention to details and follow-through
? Success in soliciting and securing support from individuals, businesses, private foundations and other institutions (with strong experience and success fundraising from individuals required, and experience with the other sources preferred in the order given here)
? Intellectual curiosity about and a commitment to sustainable business
? Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the ability to make persuasive presentations to donors, board members and other audiences
? Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills
? Demonstrated ability to build, manage and motivate an effective team, including board members and campaign volunteers
? Demonstrated ability to set priorities, organize workload and manage competing demands among multiple projects
? Ability to understand statistical/financial materials and assess the costs and benefits of various fundraising activities
? A sense of humor
? At least 7 years experience in fundraising
? A Bachelor's degree
? Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, donor management software, and the Internet
? Ability to work at computer and travel to attend meetings
? Ability to work in a fluid, fast-paced environment with frequently shifting priorities and job responsibilities and conditions
? Strong initiative and excellent judgment
