~ The mission of the Ohio Environmental Council (OEC) is to secure healthy air, land, and water for all who call Ohio home. ~
The OEC is a statewide, nonprofit environmental advocacy organization with a full-time staff of 20, a 25-member Board of Directors, more than 100 group members, more than 3,000 individual members, and more than 6,000 e-activists.
The OEC's annual budget is approximately $1.5 million, with approximately three-quarter coming from foundation grants, and the rest coming from private donors. The Ohio Environmental Council is Ohio's leading advocate for fresh air, clean water, and sustainable land use and has a widely respected 40-year history of innovation, pragmatism, and success. Using legislative initiatives, legal action, scientific principles, and statewide partnerships, we secure a healthier environment for Ohio's families and communities. Position Overview
The OED seeks to hire a dynamic, energetic, and effective policy and outreach staff person to assist with the OEC's Air and Energy programs. The staff person will establish, build, and manage credible and well-respected statewide policy initiatives for the OEC related to air, clean energy, and climate policy and advocacy.
Through community organizing, the staff person also will work to increase understanding among OEC members, the general public, and relevant groups and organizations about the critical need for progressive environmental policy measures, and to raise visibility about the need for progressive legislation and effective regulation among key local, state, and national policy makers. The staff person also will assist with OEC efforts at the legislature and as well as with Ohio's executive agencies.
The Director will answer to the Managing Director of Energy & Clean Air Programs.
Responsibilities
The Director's primary responsibility will be to provide support and action in carrying out policy campaigns. This includes:
- Clean Energy;
- Energy Efficiency, and
- Climate Change.
Additionally:
- Our new team member also will engage in regional and statewide advocacy and organizing efforts and should have a basic understanding of grassroots mobilization efforts.
- This job will present the opportunity to grow into a position of influence in policy development and research.
Qualifications
- The Director must be hard working and passionate about pushing climate solutions forward in Ohio, with skills in advocacy, outreach, and policy development.
- Basic familiarity with climate change and related air and energy policies is needed.
- Familiarity with Ohio politics and the Ohio legislative process is a plus.
- The Director must be self-motivated, energetic, able to work in a demanding environment, highly organized, detail oriented, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- In addition, the Director must possess strong interpersonal skills, strong writing and communication skills, and the ability to work with diverse constituencies with an eye to expanding our circle of allies.
- Additionally, our new team member must possess the willingness and ability to occasionally travel and work evening and weekend hours.
- The minimum qualifications include graduation from a recognized college or university with a Bachelors Degree.
