Position Overview 

The Director will work closely with SSG co-founders to define and shape our growth strategy in impact investment. At the same time, the Director will manage a small portfolio of client engagements, leveraging SSG's considerable technical and operational capabilities as well as our staff presence in Africa, Asia, Eurasia and Eastern Europe. The Director will enhance SSG visibility through speaking engagements, industry forums and publications.

Working in a small, high-growth environment, the Director must possess a strong entrepreneurial spirit, taking the initiative to execute without the support of a large support staff or infrastructure. The Director must also be a team player, able to collaborate effectively across geographies, industries and cultures.

We are envisioning that this position that this position will be based in our Burlington, Vermont home office or in our Washington, DC office. We are also willing to consider basing this position in either New York or San Francisco, provided doing so enhances our engagement with potential client bases in those key markets. We expect to fill this position in the first quarter of 2015. 

Responsibilities 

The Director will have two primary functions: driving successful client engagements and new business development. As a senior manager, the Director will have P&L responsibilities for the portfolio. Specific responsibilities include: 

Client Engagement 

  • Support SSG's existing impact investment client base with expert advisory services.
  • Lead a wide range of assignments/transactions, from initial client pitches through transaction closings, including equity and debt private placements; mergers and acquisitions; and other strategic advisory services.
  • Supervise and mentor project teams, providing sound project management and technical direction.
  • Manage and deepen existing client relationships. 

Business Development 

  • Lead the development and execution of our impact investment business development strategy that leverages SSG's unique value proposition and global presence on four continents.
  • Develop new products, services and intellectual capital designed to service the growing impact investment sector.
  • Serve as a thought leader both in industry and within the firm through publications, speaking engagements and social media.

Qualifications 

Desired: 

  • At least 5 years experience at an investment bank, management consulting, DFI, boutique M&A or private equity advisory firm with solid transaction experience across a range of transaction types in emerging markets in Africa, Asia or Latin America.
  • MBA or equivalent advanced finance degree from a top-tier program. CPA, CFA or similar certification is desirable.
  • Excellent research and business/financial analysis skills.
  • Proven financial modeling skills with solid experience in accounting and business valuation techniques.
  • Experience working with institutional investors, DFIs and/or high net worth individual and serving as lead in managing or advising client investment relationships.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, such as GIIRS and IRIS, desirable.
  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills, including public speaking, professional publications, etc.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% on short notice.
