Overview of The Department:

This position is responsible for directing a significant program within the American Express Office of Corporate Social Responsibility, which leads the company's Good Citizenship efforts worldwide, and works to enhance the image of the Company with a diverse range of internal and external audiences in the United States and internationally.

Position Overview 

This position is responsible for directing a significant program within the American Express Office of Corporate Social Responsibility, which leads the company's Good Citizenship efforts worldwide, and works to enhance the image of the Company with a diverse range of internal and external audiences in the United States and internationally. Specifically, we are seeking a Director of Sustainability to manage the company's global environmental program.

The position will direct the company's Environmental Responsibility program -- guiding the company's efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, educating employees about environmental needs, partnering with business teams, seeking and evaluating new opportunities and representing the company with a variety of external stakeholders. This role will also partner with internal business leaders to support their programs and policies pertaining to other social and governance efforts.

Responsibilities

Principle accountabilities include:

  • Collaborates with internal departments to develop and track strategies to reduce the company's impact on the environment (via energy strategy, waste reduction efforts) 
  • Convenes key stakeholders to develop and manage the framework for AXP's ongoing sustainability management program, including goal setting and tracking 
  • Creates policies and strategies to guide sustainability efforts 
  • Works with divisions across the company to help reduce their environmental impacts and shape programs with environmental benefits 
  • Develops and implements the internal and external communication strategy for the company's sustainability and social responsibility reporting 
  • Shares best practices across business divisions, geographies, and strategic partners 
  • Coordinates the company's response to sustainability and social responsibility surveys, RFP questionnaires, etc. 
  • Communicates to and educates the organization about key sustainability trends, changes in practice or policy 
  • Develops strategic relationships with environmental industry leaders, key stakeholders from public and non-profit sectors

Qualifications:  

Required Skills/Experience 

  • Experience creating and managing successful environmental programs (in a corporate setting) 
  • Deep knowledge of and ability to lead the company's environmental tracking (Carbon Accounting expertise required) and external reporting strategy 
  • Proven track record in evaluating environmental responsibility best practices, determining applicability/relevance to an organization, analyzing issues, anticipating future trends 
  • Experience driving multiple programs and projects in complex, global organization 
  • Ability to manage, influence and collaborate with cross-functional teams and mobilize stakeholders at all levels 
  • Proven track record representing an organization to and forging relationships with a wide variety of external stakeholders 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, including public speaking 
  • Ability to influence change across large organization 
  • Minimum 6 years of related experience

Educational requirement 

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Masters degree in Environmental Science and Policy is desired 


Preferred qdditional requirement
 

  • GRI/Carbon Accounting certifications preferred
