LA Waterkeeper is a proud member of the California Coastkeeper Alliance and is one of nearly 300 members of the international Waterkeeper Alliance, led by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Waterkeeper works not only on pollution issues specific to the Los Angeles area, but also with our Waterkeeper partners on issues of state-wide and national significance. 

Position Overview

Los Angeles Waterkeeper is seeking a highly-motivated individual to join our team as Development Manager. This role will manage Waterkeeper's fundraising activities, including grant writing & management, corporate and major donor outreach, and support fundraising around Waterkeeper events. This position reports to the Executive Director. 

This is a full-time exempt position; expected to work 40 hours weekly and sometimes more to get the job done. Candidate must be open to working a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends. The start date for this role is as soon as positon is filled. 

Responsibilities 

General Fundraising 

  • Develop, in collaboration with the Executive Director, and oversee annual fundraising plan that includes clear goals, objectives and action plans to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Set quarterly/annual fundraising goals and have systems in place to benchmark and track activities and progress.
  • Manage the fundraising process by ensuring that the appropriate systems, staffing and procedures are in place to support fundraising goals.
  • Work with the Executive Director and finance staff to determine goals, cash flow projections, and an annual work plan to reach overall development goals.
  • Provide detailed reports about the fundraising progress to the Executive Director and Board of Directors, and Development Committee on a regular basis.
  • Work with Events & Membership Coordinator to manage database for all foundation, corporate and major donor contacts (includes managing fundraising reports, names, and information, while ensuring recognition, acknowledgement and accurate record keeping for all gifts).
  • Work with Events & Membership Coordinator to ensure that all donors are appropriately thanked and receive regular communication by making donor stewardship a priority. 

Grant Writing & Management 

  • Research foundation, corporate and government grants to identify potential funding sources for LAW; maintain database and calendar to ensure proposals are submitted in a timely fashion.
  • Develop case for support and/or template grant requests for all LAW campaigns and projects to ensure consistent submittals.
  • Oversee drafting of grants in collaboration with program staff and the Executive Director, and submittal of all grant requests.
  • Prepare all necessary progress reports to funders in accordance with calendar developed.
  • Assemble and maintain electronic and hard-copy files of all contracts, correspondence, and documents relating to funding requests. 

Major Donor & Corporate Outreach 

  • Work with the Executive Director to develop and execute solicitation strategies for individual major donor and corporate prospects.
  • Cultivate and directly solicit major donors, working with the Executive Director, LAW Board of Directors, staff and other key volunteers, as appropriate.
  • Upgrade giving levels of current donors and pursue prospective major donors and corporate targets through targeted fundraising strategies, campaigns, and events.
  • Support the Events & Membership Coordinator's work to send direct mail appeals to ensure appropriate targeting of foundation, corporate and major donor prospects. 

Events 

  • Work with LAW's Membership & Events Coordinator and outside consultants to support fundraising activities (i.e., sponsor outreach) associated with LA Waterkeeper events, including our annual Making Waves gala, Stand Up for Clean Water paddle race, Keep It Clean comedy night, and other as needed. 

Administrative 

  • Work with LAW's Event & Membership Coordinator to coordinate LAW's Development Committee, including organizing meetings, taking/distributing minutes, and follow-up as needed, and serving as primary liaison with Board on membership, communications and events activities.
  • Recruit and manage any interns needed to support event and membership work. 

Qualifications & Requirements 

  • Applicants must have a college degree and at least 2 years of development experience, preferably in the nonprofit arena. Candidates must have experience in researching and drafting grants as well as corporate and major donor outreach, and also possess familiarity with database management (preferably with eTapesty, Constant Contact or similar software), as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • He or she must be hard working, extremely organized, self-motivated, enjoy working in a team setting, and demonstrate a deep commitment and passion for conservation and environmental protection.
  • Experience with website and social media platforms to support fundraising activities a plus. 

Physical Requirements 

  • Mobility to work in a standard office environment, use standard office equipment, and attend off-site meetings.
  • Travel to various meetings and sites throughout the county, which may involve exposure to traffic and weather conditions.
  • On a continuous basis, sit at a desk for long periods of time; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; operate a motor vehicle; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone, and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; and lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less.
  • Work both inside and outside with exposure to weather, odors, dust and pollen. 

Compensation: Salary is $55,000-$60,000, based on qualifications. Benefits include paid health and dental insurance, vacation and sick leave.
