We also care for our land and water resources through restoration and watershed health programs. And we connect the community to these causes so that we are all working together to create a legacy of conservation.

Position Overview

The Development Director works closely with the Executive Director and Board to develop strategies building the organization and raising the funds needed to carry out the Conservancy's new strategic plan.

This position will take the lead role in developing donor relationships and planning effective methods to raise additional funds for the organization's conservation programs. The position is based out of the Central Colorado Conservancy's office in Salida, Colorado.

The Central Colorado Conservancy is an active organization working in a five county area. Our focus is to protect land and water resources, steward and restore these resources and connect community members to conservation. The Development Director will become part of a small professional team dedicated to the mission of the organization.  

The Development Director reports to the Executive Director. Annual work plans and goals are developed with the Executive Director. Performance for this position is linked to funds raised and the financial health of the organization.  

Responsibilities

  • Work in cooperation with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and the Fundraising Committee to develop funding strategies including processes and systems that support the financial goals of the organization.
  • Develop strong relationships with individual donors and businesses. 
  • Cultivate major donors and Common Cents for Conservation partners on behalf of the organization.
  • Coordinate the activities of the fundraising committee.
  • Ensure that fundraising strategies and programs are integrated into the organization's strategic plan and associated action plan.
  • Build relationships with local, state and national foundation.
  • Lead fundraising campaigns as developed by the organization.
  • Oversee prospect research with existing and potential donors
  • Plan and implement donor cultivation events coordinating with board members and other staff to relate the key work of the organization.
  • Work on other development related tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.  

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Previous track record of fundraising with major donor experience preferred.
  • Comfort level discussing potential gifts with donors.
  • At least three years' experience with nonprofit organizations.
  • Background with planning and carrying out events.
  • Experience with planned giving, donor databases and grant writing a plus.  

Requirements:

  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Position requires computer use, ability to sit at a desk and carrying materials up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to use a telephone and communicate clearly with the person on the other end.
  • Need to on occasion walk/hike over rough terrain to visit conservation properties.
  • Strong writing and verbal skills.
  • Exceptional planning, organizational and management skills.
  • Interpersonal skills to talk to and secure gifts from various individuals.
  • Familiarity with common computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.  

Compensation: This part-time position offers a salary that will be dependent upon experience.
