Californians for Alternatives to Toxics (CATs) was founded in 1982 by community groups from throughout northern California who wanted a regional resource center for information and action about hazardous chemicals, especially pesticides, and for promotion of organically produced products.

Our mission is to enable our members and the public to gain control over pesticides and other toxic chemicals within the environment of California in ways that will benefit people around the world. Over the past 23 years, CATs has been successful in fulfilling this important organizational mission.

Job Description: 

The Development Director is responsible for securing support for the activities of Californians for Alternatives to Toxics through the development and implementation of a diversified fundraising program. S/he has a strong desire to improve the environment and, toward this end, works as an innovative and strategic team member. S/he possesses strong writing and organizing skills, with energy and self-motivation directed by high standards for personal and organizational integrity. 

Reports to: Executive Director

Responsibilities

  • Supervise membership development and special events    
  • Secure foundation support    
  • Coordinate major donor campaigns

Specific Tasks:

  • Work with the Executive Director to establish and meet annual fundraising goals    
  • Develop fundraising activities that provide both core organizational support and funding for specific projects    
  • Design and implement a program of cultivation, outreach and solicitation of major donors    
  • Develop and coordinate fundraising events, including the annual Organic Planet Festival    
  • Oversee program to increase membership enrollment         
  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit foundations to support the activities of Californians for Alternatives to Toxics    
  • Prepare fundraising calendar and reports, and maintain development files

Required Skills, Education, Experience:

  • Self-motivated & independent; ability to manage multiple tasks and work within a deadline    
  • Capacity to interact as part of a collaborative team and with a variety of people    
  • Proven ability to secure foundation support    
  • Experience in the production of special events    
  • Skilled in solicitation of donations from individuals and businesses    
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills    
  • Computer literacy    
  • Bachelors Degree and/or appropriate experience    
  • Basic knowledge of the effect of toxic pollutants on human health and the environment    
  • Familiarity with the northern California region    
  • Knowledge of long-term strategic planning processes    
  • Proficiency in Spanish is desired, though not required

Salary:  Starts at $34,000 and may be adjusted depending on skills and experience. Benefits are provided.
