Earthjustice seeks an enthusiastic and highly organized individual for the position of Development Database Manager. Position Overview: 

The Database Manager works with fundraising staff to maximize the effectiveness of a complex and evolving donor database (BBEC). Reporting to the Development Operations Manager, the Database Manager serves as the professional and technical resource for staff and vendors in their use of the system and responds creatively to data-driven business challenges across the department, including major donor and foundation moves management, a complex direct marketing program, and the accurate and timely entry of a high volume of donor data.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic leader with strong technical knowledge and exceptional communication and project management skills who can guide the department in the use of technology and systems to retain and grow a sustainable base of funding.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary data contact for direct marketing vendors, performing complex data selects, segment creation, and imports.
  • Maintain the overall integrity and quality of the donor database, including regular data improvement and hygiene, enforcement of database business processes, and management of code values, business rules and other set-up functions of the database.
  • Document, review, and update practices and procedures for use of BBEC to increase efficiency and enhance performance; provide feedback on improvements or changes to business processes and documentation provided by users.
  • Optimize use of the database across the department by staying current on upcoming enhancements to BBEC functionality and guiding staff in the appropriate use of existing functionality.
  • Lead all aspects of software version upgrades, including planning, project management, feature testing and business process redesign.
  • Oversee the work of a Database Assistant in fulfillment of highly segmented donor mailing lists, analytical reports and regular imports and overlays according to a high-volume, time-sensitive, and multi-channel production calendar.
  • Provide support and training in use of application, including orientation for all new staff and specialized training in response to changes in staff roles, business processes, and database functionality; troubleshoot and resolve application and database-related problems.
  • Supports colleagues by investigating problems and recommending solutions relative to any and all database functions, leveraging IT and Blackbaud Support relationships as necessary.
  • Maintain data integrity by performing queries, conducting research, and updating records.
  • Strategically manage the relationship with the Blackbaud support team, escalating issues that require immediate resolution, advocating for fixes or patches to the application when appropriate, and communicating to Earthjustice staff when issues require internal resolution.
  • Manage one part-time Database Assistant.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years direct experience in complex fundraising database management.
  • Demonstrated ability to manipulate and report on data using SQL.
  • Experience in support of complex direct marketing fundraising functions is highly desirable.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including ability to prioritize and manage multiple urgent tasks, follow procedures and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in an environment of scheduled deliverables where requirements can change.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to think creatively and strategically.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly convey concepts and procedures and to build effective working relationships.
  • Broad knowledge of fundraising principles and familiarity with direct marketing strategy is preferred; passion for the environment is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
