Commonweal, founded in 1976, is a nonprofit institute with programs in health, the environment and education. Commonweal is located in beautiful coastal Bolinas, California, an hour north of San Francisco. Commonweal has a very capable staff of 30 and highly regarded programs for cancer patients, doctors and other health care professionals, environmental health, ocean policy reform, juvenile justice reform, permaculture gardening, adult education and more.

Position Overview:

Commonweal is seeking a Development Associate to manage Commonweal's development efforts including but not limited to: foundation and major donor work; corporate sponsorship; event planning; and mail and web programs.

The position may be constructed as 2 part-time positions. The Development Associate(s) will work to maximize both unrestricted income and targeted support for Commonweal.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and identify donor prospects, including individuals, corporations and foundations
  • Implement major donor initiative
  • Research and write grant proposals
  • Coordinate special events as required; secure corporate sponsorships as needed
  • Work with grants administrator to update and maintain donor and foundation files
  • Expand Commonweal's Web-based fund-raising efforts
  • Work on development-related activities and special projects as assigned
  • Represent Commonweal to funders and the community at large

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship:

  • Create plan for engaging major donors
  • Engage potential and existing majors
  • Actively pursue funding
  • Implement donor stewardship and appreciation program
  • Develop planned giving, in memory of, in honor of programs

Foundation and Corporate Solicitation:

  • Research foundation prospects
  • Draft grant proposals and reports
  • Ensure timely completion of progress and final reports

Database Management:

  • Complete upgrade of donor database
  • Ensure timely data input for prospect and stewardship tracking purposes
  • Prepare and present a variety of reports including contact and giving history 

Special Events:

  • Coordinate special events including but not limited to donor dinners, art auctions and music shows
  • Secure sponsorships
  • Organize host committees and event volunteers

Marketing and Web:

  • Expand web-based fundraising and marketing efforts
  • Manage the creation and production of fund-raising materials 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be a versatile development professional, experienced in fund-raising research, grant writing, fund solicitation, and events. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; a history of success in raising funds for programs and core support; and a sincere passion for work with healing and environmental health is required. A minimum of 7 years experience is required. Honesty, integrity, humility, and a strong will are critical to this work.
