The Center for a New American Dream helps Americans consume responsibly to protect the environment, enhance quality of life, and promote social justice. We work with individuals, institutions, communities, and businesses to conserve natural resources, counter the commercialization of our culture, and promote positive changes in the way goods are produced and consumed.

Position Overview: 

The successful candidate for this position will join a dynamic staff of professionals that are seeking to expand and diversify New American Dream's influence within the environmental movement. This senior level position will be split between program/campaign development duties and fundraising responsibilities. The agency has a current annual budget of approximately $1.7 million and employs approximately 20 full and part-time staff.  The Deputy Director will report directly to the Executive Director.

We are seeking a creative, energetic self-starter, with the ability to communicate vision and mission to effectively co-lead our staff, and to obtain consistent financial support for the organization's programs. We seek an individual with strong interpersonal and leadership skills and excellence in oral and written communications. 

The successful applicant must have the ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently to maintain the engagement, commitment and excitement of the board of directors, staff, volunteers, and supporters around the New Dream mission and programs which include the Responsible Purchasing Network, the Conscious Consumer Marketplace, our Bottled Water and Cater to the Earth campaigns, among numerous others. Applicants must be familiar with the fundraising procedures of federal, state, foundations, corporate and private individuals, as well as the Combined Federal Campaign.

The successful candidate, in collaboration with program staff, will initiate and carry out comprehensive campaigns that raise New American Dream's national visibility.  Specifically, s/he will collaborate with staff to ensure that all aspects of our campaigns (including program design, media/public relations, marketing, web, publications and fundraising) are integrated, successful and financially sustainable. 

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Executive Director and staff to oversee long-term strategic growth of the organization
  • In collaboration with key staff and the Executive Director,  develop and implement, dynamic, cutting edge campaigns and programs that promote a New American Dream to our community of individual supporters and institutional members
  • Oversee the fundraising department.
    • Develop and write federal and private foundation grant proposals
    • Fine-tune and expand major donor and planned giving programs.
  • Participate in budgeting and finance oversight.
  • Participate in staff management and development.
  • Represent the Center for a New American Dream at events and conferences.
  • Cultivate partnership opportunities.

Qualifications: 

  • A passion for the environment, green living, social justice and conscious consumption.  Strong understanding of environmental issues and the economy is preferred.
  • A Bachelor's degree. A Master's degree in business or public administration or other advanced degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of non-profit or business senior management experience. Commitment to building a successful team.
  • Demonstrated success in the areas of fundraising, and program development.
  • Demonstrated experience with on-line organizing / social networking tools and on-line fundraising strategies.
  • Superior competence with relevant computer software, e. g., Excel, Word, and fundraising database software.
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to travel on behalf of the organization
  • Enthusiasm for the New Dream's mission, high integrity, and a great sense of humor.

32 hours per week (Monday - Thursday)

Location: Takoma Park, MD (three blocks from the Takoma Metro Station on the red line)

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience; medical insurance; 3 weeks paid vacation plus 1 week off at end of December.  After 1 year, group term life and disability insurance, contribution by employer to 403(b).
