Description

Since November 1999, GLOBE USA has had a deputy director to lead the membership recruitment efforts, programmatic implementation and staff supervision. The position was created to work in partnership with the executive director and is intended to compliment the executive director both in skills and in responsibilities. While the executive director has been responsible for board relations, and is the primary contact with GLOBE USAs membership, the deputy director has been the focal point for congressional staff, GLOBE USA staff and GLOBE affiliate staff.

GLOBE USA seeks a candidate who will steer the organization to a new level of productivity and prominence. The selection process will involve a wide range of actors within the GLOBE USA family including the executive director, the board of directors and the leaders of GLOBE USA membership. This process will ensure that the successful candidate will have his or her own mandate to be a leader within the GLOBE USA structure.

GLOBE USA is the United States affiliate of Global Legislators Organization for a Balanced Environment (GLOBE). GLOBE USA is a voluntary, educational association with a nonpartisan membership consisting of senators and representatives from the U.S. Congress. We promote balanced and informed policy decisions to address the worlds most pressing environmental issues.

GLOBE USA is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization based in Washington, DC.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will bring his or her own significant assets to the organization and will help expand the organizations programmatic scope, funding base, and membership. The candidate will be a recognized leader in his/her own right with a record of accomplishments and history seeking environmental success in a bi-partisan approach. Graduate studies and degrees in relevant disciplines will be considered highly favorable. The successful candidate will have met the following qualifications to be considered for this position:

  • Five to seven years of experience working with Members of Congress, as a congressional staff person, in the environmental community, or in the environmentally positive private sector;
  • A demonstrated ability to think strategically, plan and implement high impact efforts with measurable results;
  • Strong written skills exemplified by an ability to convey complex ideas and policies through simple, concise, and clear language;
  • Strong oral skills and an established record of success in public speaking;
  • A broad knowledge of and experience in working on international environmental issues, specifically in the issue areas that will augment GLOBE USAs leadership in the policy areas such as marine conservation or renewable energy development;
  • A strong record of leadership in team settings as well as an ability to work as part of a team and to take directions;
  • A history of success in human resource management;
    Strong judgement and diplomatic skills enabling the successful candidate to work with a wide range of people including Members of Congress, members of parliament(s) and other high level officials from diverse national backgrounds and cultures;
  • Demonstrated record as a successful fundraiser from foundations and corporate sources with an established knowledge of grant and proposal writing;
  • A collaborative disposition;
  • Open-minded to welcome new ideas and suggestions from any number of sources.

Duties

The deputy director will work with the executive director to develop and implement effective programs, which will activate Members of Congress as leaders on international environmental issues. The deputy director will assist the executive director in the strategic formulation of the program and will be the lead staff person in implementation of all program areas.

The deputy director will be the primary supervisor for the small staff of professionals comprising the GLOBE USA Secretariat. He/she will facilitate the staffs work by removing barriers to progress, resolving disputes that may arise, and by assisting staff in understanding and completing their work objectives. The deputy director will work with staff to research opportunities, will pursue new ideas and will write proposals and reports to foundations. The deputy director may have a particular focus on corporate fundraising; fundraising will be an important basis for performance evaluation.

As a membership based organization, GLOBE USA must constantly strive to serve its membership better. The deputy director will be the lead staff person in efforts to increase GLOBE USAs bipartisan membership. The incumbent will be the primary contact for GLOBE USA congressional staff leads. He or she will work with the staff to fine tune the organization so it can serve the membership in a comprehensive and timely manner.

GLOBE USA is a part of a larger international network of legislators from all continents in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. This position will coordinate with the directors of other GLOBE affiliates and will participate in GLOBE International meetings and conferences. The deputy director will also actively assist GLOBE International in organizing international events and conferences and may supervise dedicated GLOBE International staff.

Reporting

The deputy director will report to the executive director of GLOBE USA who will be responsible for evaluating his/her performance. This process will be in tandem with input from our valued staff.

Salary and Benefits

GLOBE USA has a generous benefits package including full health, dental, life, short-term and long-term disability insurance, as well as three weeks vacation per year. The salary range for this position is $50,000 to 60,000, commensurate with experience, plus the possibility of a bonus based upon performance.
