Position Overview:
Seed Savers Exchange is currently seeking a Database Programmer to support the needs of curatorial staff through a complete redesign of our existing collection database. Project requirements include database redesign and normalization, data clean up, migration from MS Access to SQL Server (or other true multi-user enterprise database), writing queries, creating a user-friendly interface including forms and reports, and implementation of a bar-coding system. This project includes integrating the improved database with GRIN-Global, an open-source database platform developed specifically for gene banks, with continual database development and on-going maintenance expected.
Responsibilities:
Applicants should have experience with designing relational databases, system analysis, MS Access, SQL, and migrating from Access to a true multi-user database. Successful candidates will have strong organizational and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent communication skills.
Additional job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Database implementation from start to finish;
- Assessing overall system functionality and creating solutions to improve efficiency;
- Development of a user friendly front-end for multiple users across departments.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field
- A background in the biological sciences is preferred, but not required
