Description

About Us

Sequoia Climate Fund is a new philanthropy that seeks to decarbonize the world economy at a speed and scale equal to the problem.

We support bold strategies and efforts that will have both near-term impact and the greatest probability of long-term success. We believe that solving climate change requires the adoption of ambitious, evidence-based policy solutions that transform markets, advance clean technology, and lead to large‐scale change.

Our focus areas include power, transportation, buildings, industry, land use, agriculture and forestry, finance, communications, movement building and public engagement. Sequoia Climate Fund is active in major emitting geographies, including (but not limited to) China, the United States, the European Union, Brazil and India. We are dedicated to building the political will and powerful coalitions needed to achieve these bold policy solutions. Our office and staff are located in Irvine, California.

Our Guiding Principles:

  • Human-centered. Our underlying motivation is human-centered. We understand the heightened impacts the climate crisis has on underserved communities, communities of color and at-risk global populations in this and future generations.
  • Speed and Scale. We focus on the strategies, tactics and geographies where our grantees can have the greatest impact decarbonizing the economy and accelerating the transition to clean energy.
  • Data-Driven. We invest in science-based climate change solutions that have the highest probability of achieving the largest near-term impact. Our foundation seeks solutions that maximize results, understanding that the best solutions influence and magnify efforts by others.
  • Global Effort. With grantees and staff located around the world, we are active in multiple geographies based on opportunities for cost-effective mitigation.
  • Optimism and Bold Action. Our optimism drives our ambition. To succeed, we take calculated risks on strategies that are justified by their transformative potential.
  • Collaborative. Our grantees are closer to their focus areas than we are, and we respect their expertise. We are committed to building relationships with them in a spirit of respect and humility and learning with them as we support their work.
  • Together, we can. We work within the community of climate policymakers, scientists and activists while also building networks of outside organizations and other influencers. Communications and public engagement are the catalysts that make policy change possible.
  • Urgency. Immediate climate action is needed to avoid dangerous climate tipping points and irreversible damage.

About the Role

The Data Visualization Associate will be responsible for supporting the analysis of internal and external datasets and the development of clear, compelling data products to inform evidence-based strategies for climate change mitigation. These data products may include reproducible figures, reports and presentations as well as interactive data visualizations and dashboards.

Under the supervision of the Director of Evidence and Learning, they will collaborate closely with Sequoia Climate Fund’s subject matter experts and data analysis staff to translate analytical outputs into data products that directly inform real-time decision-making. While this position is not responsible for publishing original research, the Data Visualization Associate will be responsible for developing and maintaining reproducible data workflows that facilitate collaborative analysis with Sequoia Climate Fund’s peer funders, grantees, industry experts and academics.

  • Synthesis of large and complex external datasets (e.g., climate scenarios; energy projections) to support internal analyses.
  • Development of clear, compelling data visualization products (including figures, reports and presentations).
  • Development of decision-support tools and products (including dashboards and interactive visualizations).
  • Develop and maintain reproducible data workflows (via GitHub) for both external and internal datasets.
  • Other duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with climate and energy datasets (and their assumptions/limitations) is preferred.
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work both independently and collaboratively (including in collaborative data coding environments).
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and external collaborators.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with complete discretion.
