~ Sunrise Movement is dedicated to stopping climate change and creating millions of good jobs in the process, by building an army of young people to make climate change an urgent priority across America, end the corrupting influence of fossil fuel executives on our politics, and elect leaders who stand up for the health and wellbeing of all people.  ~
 
In November 2018, following our 6-month 75-person electoral organizing fellowship, Sunrise Semester, we launched the campaign for a Green New Deal alongside Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In 2019, Sunrise has continued fighting for a Green New Deal and elevating the urgency of climate change in the public and the media. Sunrise Movement Education Fund (501c3) and Sunrise (501c4) are organizations dedicated to supporting the mobilization and leadership of Sunrise Movement. 
 
Position Description
 
The Creative Action Organizer supports Sunrise movement hubs to take action through visual art tactics and nonviolent direct action.
 
Their primary goal is to grow the use of creative action tactics across Sunrise’s hubs and network in line with our shared movement goals, to build art and action skills and leadership throughout the movement, and build peer community amongst volunteer leaders.
 
50% of this role will be spent resourcing and coaching role networks (primarily the action arts role network, and to some extent the Action Leads) with a particular emphasis on supporting volunteers to co-design and manage the network.  
 
50% will be spent working on coaching and training opportunities. Under social isolation, this will primarily be through Sunrise Creative School, as well as for campaign-specific opportunities.  After social isolation lifts, this role would also include supporting Regional Summit art builds or in-person training's.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

  • Oversee programming related to training our chapters (aka. “hubs”) in creative skills
  • Manage core team of volunteers who hold and grow the larger network of hub leaders---growing volunteer skills in organizing, volunteer recruitment, 1:1’s, as well as key art skills

Will also support in:

  • Interfacing with Sunrise’s campaigns to identify key asks and priorities for hub creative leaders, synthesizing an organization’s narrative, strategy, and campaigns into action art tactics that our hubs can execute locally
  • Training  members of our chapters (aka. “hubs”) in action arts & nonviolent direct action.
  • Action arts skills includes: supporting our hubs to make strategic messaging and designs,  create physical props (signs, banners etc.)  to use at protests, and stage/document actions well. 
  • Nonviolent direct action skills includes: action planning, action roles, risk assessment and preparation, and crafting action strategy: action tactics, targets, demands.

Qualifications / Requirements

Orientation:

  • Orientation to justice, equity, and anti-oppression practices in creative process and team building.
  • Deep commitment to visual strategy as a component of movement building
  • Deep commitment to nonviolent direct action as a tactic for building power 
  • Familiarity with social movement, community organizing or political campaigns as context for creative work
  • Strong orientation towards relationship-building and leadership development

Competencies:

  • Comfort with remote work
  • Experience building and managing volunteer teams
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Project management & team coordination skills 
  • Has participated in nonviolent direct action
  • At least some familiarity with at least 2-3 of the following: photography,  graphic design, painting/printmaking, woodworking, video
  • Curriculum development

Preferred:

  • Hands-on Experience making art for protests, parades or pageants (theater, tech theater or arts administration experience encouraged and welcome) 
  • Experience developing curriculum in both hands-on art skill-building and political or social theory (education or teaching backgrounds welcome)
  • Experience leading teams in to action (eg: as a police liaison, action lead,  or action planning)
  • Fluency in Adobe Suite
  • Experience on Every Action, Action Network  or similar CRM
  • Has volunteered with Sunrise Movement, or a similar org, and especially Sunrise Movement’s Action Art Network
