Description
This full-time professional-level position involves a wide variety of responsibilities supporting the program and operations of the Salton Sea Coalition (SSC), whose mission is to protect and restore the Salton Sea ecosystem for the benefit of future generations. The SSC Coordinator will serve as a liaison to other organizations, federal/state/local agencies, tribes, elected officials and their staff, and the general public.
Must possess a solid background in organizing. Must have excellent writing/editing skills in order to assist with drafting and revising documents and publications. Must be extremely well- organized and capable of juggling many different projects and tasks.
Assignments are results- or goal-oriented, requiring substantial discretion on the part of the position in determining how to meet the assigned goal (e.g., producing a newsletter or generating grass-roots support). Must be willing to travel extensively as part of the effort to build support for the Coalition. This position reports to the Salton Sea Coalition Management Committee.
Duties
General Program Support: Undertake a wide variety of duties as needed to implement program plans, including producing fact sheets, drafting letters, negotiating sign-ons to Coalition letters, representing the Coalition in meetings, writing and editing reports and proposals.
Public Education and Citizen Organizing: Undertake campaign to build solid public support for the Salton Sea by giving public presentations regarding the Sea, meeting with potential coalition partners, and working with consultant and Coalition to create a website for the Coalition.
Media: Work with Coalition members and consultant to create a media campaign. Meet and brief members of the media regarding the Sea. Draft and place opinion pieces and letters to the editor in targeted newspapers.
Meetings: Coordinate scheduling and agendas for Coalition meetings; attend all relevant internal meetings; represent the Coalition at requested outside meetings or hearings.
Fundraising and Membership: Work with other Coalition members and contractors to develop fundraising materials that are effective and consistent with other coalition materials.
Event and Activity Planning: Coordinate events such as conferences, public education fairs, open houses, press conferences, and legislative and media briefing tours.
Computer Assistance: Work with consultant to update SSC Coalition web page and insure program related materials remain current. Carry out desktop publishing projects as needed.
Qualifications
Job requirements include a college degree and environmental experience, organizing experience, good organizational and communication skills, and a commitment to conservation. Good writing and editing skills. Must be extremely well organized and capable of setting priorities in consultation with other staff.
