Philanthropy has a critical role to play in solving the climate crisis. ClimateWorks is a global non-governmental organization that helps leading funders come together to be more strategic, efficient & effective in their response to global climate change.

  • Provide Research & Insights: ClimateWorks aggregates, synthesizes, and presents emissions data and political, social, technical, and economic analyses in a way that offers insights for climate philanthropy. These insights help funders prioritize opportunities to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, develop strategies that are robust under different future scenarios, adapt strategies to changing conditions, and track progress towards climate goals.
  • Develop Strategies & Portfolios of Philanthropic Investments: ClimateWorks collaborates with partners globally to develop portfolios of philanthropic investments designed to achieve large-scale greenhouse gas emissions reductions. With its partners, ClimateWorks evaluates insights from a wide range of sources, develops informed strategies, and clusters strategies into diversified, high-impact portfolios for philanthropic investment. It then monitors progress and applies candid assessments to drive learning and improvement.
  • Facilitate Funder Collaboration & Coordination: ClimateWorks facilitates collaboration among influential philanthropic funders-creating opportunities for them to interact with their peers, compare strategies, generate ideas, and coordinate investments that target the biggest drivers of global climate change.
  • Fund Climate Change Initiatives: ClimateWorks makes strategic grants that support select transnational initiatives and organizations addressing climate change in critical parts of the world. 
  • Marshal Philanthropic Resources: ClimateWorks helps increase the number of foundations working to address climate change and grow the overall size of philanthropic investment directed towards climate action. Central to this effort is its work with funders to help them evaluate investment opportunities that are aligned with their interests and priorities, and to connect them to like-minded peers.

Position Overview

ClimateWorks is seeking an experienced, professional, and hands-on Controller who will be responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the organization's accounting operations in a dynamic, collaborative, and mission-based environment. The ideal candidate will be experienced in all aspects of non-profit financial management and will play the lead role in performing the organization's accounting including policies, accounts payables, accounts receivable, G/L, and payroll.

The successful candidate will be detail-oriented and have a strategic, quick-thinking, and highly analytical mind. The Controller will supervise up to two staff and will report to the Senior Director of Finance. This position will be located in San Francisco, CA. 

Responsibilities

The Controller will perform the following and other duties as assigned:

Accounting, Audit, and Tax Return

  • Oversee the completion of financial statements.
  • Oversee the annual financial statement audit and ensure timely and accurate preparation of all schedules and reconciliations, act as point person for auditors, and manage all document requests.
  • Oversee accounting for two sole member LLCs - Climate and Land Use Alliance, LLC and Latin America Regional Climate Initiative, LLC.
  • Oversee filing of federal and state tax returns, including preparation of schedules and reconciliations.
  • Define and implement accounting policies and procedures, including all travel and expense reimbursement policies.
  • Ensure accounting records adhere to GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate internal controls for all accounting functions.
  • Oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, credit card expense reporting, and 1099 filing functions.
  • Oversee preparation of journal entries, and supporting schedules monthly for accrued expenses, expense allocations, etc.
  • Oversee monthly balance sheet account reconciliations and fixed asset and depreciation schedules.
  • Manage grant award accounting within revenue recognition policy guidelines, including tracking of restricted funding.
  • Manage banking functions, including cash account reconciliations and cash transfer requests.
  • Manage payroll in coordination with HR Director.
  • Assist with other filings and finance projects as necessary.

Financial Reporting

  • Oversee all financial reporting for ClimateWorks executive team and board of directors.
  • Maintain cash-based financial reports and forecasts, including tracking by funder grant.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports, including (1) grant financial reports and (2) management reports for internal budget managers (for operating departments and program budgets), subsidiaries, and incubated programs/organizations.

Team Leadership

  • Leverage strengths of the team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and professional development plans in order to maximize and reach optimal individual goals.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.

Financial Planning and Analysis

  • Provide financial analysis, such as analysis of grantee budgets, as needed.
  • Assist in budgeting, forecast, and planning process. Produce templates for distribution to department heads; track, review, and rollup budget and forecast submissions. 

Qualifications


The successful applicant will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience required with a minimum of 5 years non-profit accounting experience.
  • Corporate or private hands-on accounting experience required.
  • Experience with client services firm a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required.
  • Licensed CPA preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP.
  • Advanced Excel skill level (i.e., experienced with pivot tables, managing large data sets, use of VLOOKUP formulas).
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software (ClimateWorks currently uses Quickbooks Premier Non-Profit Edition); experience overseeing software installations preferred.
  • Ability to write policies and procedures and document work processes.
  • Exposure to international accounting procedures a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal communications skills; ability to communicate policies and financial concepts to non-finance managers.
  • Flexible nature and ability to work under pressure and manage shifting priorities under competing deadlines.
