The not-for-profit Monterey Bay Aquarium opened in 1984, and has earned a reputation for being among the world's finest. Located on Monterey's historic Cannery Row and featuring exhibitions that focus on Monterey Bay's diverse habitats and wildlife, it attracts between 1.7 and 2.4 million visitors each year.

The institution's mission is to inspire conservation of the oceans, both through exhibits and through conservation research and advocacy in such areas as sea otters, open-ocean fishes research, marine protected areas, fisheries health and others. More than 80,000 schoolchildren take advantage of the aquarium's free education programs and tours every year.

Position Overview:

Responsible for directing organization's accounting functions.  Includes establishing and maintaining the organization's principles, practices, procedures and initiatives.  Prepares financial reports and presents findings and recommendations to management.  Provides management any and all financial information necessary to make policy decisions.  Supervises all accounting functions. 

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise accounting and payroll processing staff.
  • Oversee monthly closing of general ledger.
  • Create monthly and year-end financial reports, including special reports such as grants.
  • Train users on FRX and Great Plains systems as needed.
  • Manager and coordinate the annual audit.
  • Oversee compliance with federal requirements associated with the receipt of federal funds, including the following: Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-133, Audits of States, Local Governments, and Non-Profit Organizations; Circular A-122, Cost Principles for Nonprofit Organizations; Education, Hospitals, and Other Nonprofit Institutions.
  • Annually establish a current indirect cost rate.
  • Maintain chart of accounts.
  • Monitor and reconcile the temporarily restricted funds balances and activity each month. Monitor and reconcile endowment funds balances and activity each month.
  • Maintain and enhance accounting function internal control environment, including continuous improvement and documentation of policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate preparation of schedules for tax reporting.
  • Manage and coordinate other outside audit activities: sales tax, EDD, workers' compensation, etc.
  • Serve as payroll backup.
  • Review for accuracy all entries to the accounting system.
  • Research, recommend and implement changes to accounting software as appropriate (working with Information Systems).

Qualifications:

  • A/BS in accounting required. CPA strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience as controller in a not-for-profit environment and a minimum of 8 years experience in an accounting environment or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years supervisory and management experience. Excellent supervisory skills required.
  • Experience with implementing and maintaining and accounting system with multiple restricted funds.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal OMB accounting and reporting requirement.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with establishing and maintaining internal control policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a team environment.
  • Demonstrates expertise in a variety of the field's concepts, practices and procedures.
