Position Overview
We are currently seeking applicants for the Conservation Field Crew Member position. Work Schedule: Full-time hourly (30-40 hours per week) or part-time hourly (up to 20 hours per week) Actual hours may vary depending on project/conditions.
Responsibilities
- A Conservation Field Crew Member will carry out general conservation field work at various locations statewide under close supervision by a Crew Leader and/or Project Manager.
- Projects may include (but are not limited to) installing ungulate-proof fence along a ridgeline to removing invasive mangrove from a coastal wetland, and numerous other critical environmental services in between.
Qualifications
Required:
- Passion for preserving Hawaiʻi’s native plants, animals, and ecosystems
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn, giving 100% effort each day
- Be responsible and follow directions while working in small teams or independently
- Effective communication among fellow Crew Members, Crew Leader, and/or Project Manager
- Ability to perform physically challenging work in remote and/or potentially harsh conditions for 8-10 hours a day
- Ability to pass a background check and/or gain military base access clearance
- Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds
- Ability to camp in remote areas for multiple days at a time and/or travel occasionally
Preferred:
- Prior knowledge/experience maintaining and safely operating gas-powered tools (chainsaw, weed trimmer, etc.)
- Prior knowledge/experience working with pesticides/herbicides (basic safety, calculating simple mixtures, etc.)
- Prior knowledge/experience constructing ungulate-proof/predator-proof fence in remote areas
- Prior knowledge/experience operating heavy machinery (excavator, skid steer)
- Prior knowledge/experience constructing and maintaining trails
- Familiarity identifying/distinguishing between native and non-native species
Compensation
- Starting pay is $13/hour (varies by project)
- Although our work can be demanding, it is both very unique and very rewarding
