Description
~ The Door County Land Trust is a local, non-profit organization that was established in 1986 to preserve and restore Door County's open spaces, scenic beauty & ecological integrity. ~
To date, the trust has protected nearly 7,000 acres and created dozens of nature preserves that are open to the public. The Land Trust holds 67 conservation easement agreements covering about 2,800 acres and owns and manages over 30 public nature preserves throughout the county.
Position Overview
The Conservation Easement and Land Protection Specialist is charged with leading the planning, coordination, management and execution of all aspects of DCLT's conservation easement program and assisting with fee-owned land acquisition projects as assigned.
Core general duties include:
- Building effective, long-term relationships with current and prospective conservation easement landowners.
- Overseeing and coordinating DCLT's conservation easement monitoring program.
- Preparing and updating Baseline Documentation Reports.
- GIS map preparation.
- Overseeing conservation easement inquiries, approval requests, and violation incidents.
- Assisting with the development of policies and procedures relating to the Conservation Easement Program.
- Assisting in new conservation easement negotiation and drafting.
Other duties include:
- Assisting with fee-owned land purchases and land donations.
- Helping to build strong partnerships with Board members, committees, volunteers, agency personnel and others associated with DCLT's Land Program.
- Assisting with the development and implementation of a comprehensive Land Program record keeping system and database.
Responsibilities
Land Projects:
- Oversee and manage all aspects of DCLT's conservation easement program, including:
- DCLT's conservation easement monitoring program, including the coordination and training of any volunteer monitors.
- Creation of and updates to conservation easement monitoring binders.
- Development of and updates to Baseline Documentation Reports.
- Addressing conservation easement-related inquiries, notices and approvals, and potential easement violations.
- Implementation of proactive outreach strategies and educational programs for conservation easement landowners.
- Implementation of DCLT Successor Landowner Easement Policy -- work with realtors and prospective buyers of lands under DCLT conservation easements and develop solid working relationship with successor CE landowners.
- Development and care of records and documentation associated with the conservation easement program.
- In partnership with the Director of Land Program and Land Policy Committee, identify and negotiate new conservation easements that help fulfill the mission of the Door County Land Trust.
- Assist the Director of Land Program with completing fee-owned land acquisition projects including land purchase transactions and land donations.
- As needed, assist Director of Land Program, Senior Land Steward, Land Project Manager and Stewardship Field Assistant with assignments.
Personnel and Planning:
- Oversee the coordination and training of volunteers and staff involved with conservation easement monitoring program.
- Meet routinely with Director of Land Program to assess the conservation easement program and discuss ways to improve the program.
- Assist in 5-year strategic and annual work planning for the conservation easement and land acquisition programs.
- Assist in the development of individual Master Land Management Plans for DCLT preserves.
- Partner with the Land Project Manager in the maintenance of a master lands database and land file records.
Facilitate partnerships among board and committee members and other volunteers that participate in Land Program activities:
- Prepare conservation easement and land acquisition materials for Board of Director, staff and Land Policy Committee meetings.
- Participate in DCLT's "Explore the Door" outing program and other events on DCLT protected properties.
- Assist in the development of newsletters, PR, kiosk and other educational materials as assigned.

Qualifications
- This position requires a genuine enthusiasm for the land preservation mission of DCLT.
- Strong communication skills are needed to build solid relations with landowners, in particular owners of land protected by DCLT conservation easement agreements, as well as relations with staff and volunteers involved in the conservation easement program.
- Ideal candidates will possess at least 2 years of experience working with conservation easements and real estate transactions.
- This position requires a working knowledge of conservation biology and of the basic tenets of land restoration and management.
- An innate ability to be a team player is needed as are strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize activities and tasks.
- Must have good working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and experience with Arc 10 or related GIS software.
