Description
American Rivers is developing a national report on the state of the nation's riverfronts. The report will include in-depth case examples of "smart" riverfront developments and an analysis of the economic benefits of low-impact development approaches. The report will also present a set of specific river-sensitive development guidelines being developed in concert with leading experts in restoration ecology, landscape design, urban planning, stream ecology, hydrology, and environmental engineering.
In addition to helping to develop the report, the Community Rivers Fellow will assist with other aspects of our new program, including:
* Research on the extent of alterations to riparian ecosystems and effective policy approaches to prevent alteration (e.g., rock used to stabilize riverbanks near vacation homes along scenic river reaches); and
* Research on the extent of new development in floodplains and effective policy mechanisms -- federal, state, and local -- to prevent continued encroachments.
