The Homewaters Project is looking for a part-time Communications/Outreach Fellow.
The Homewaters Project, formerly the Thornton Creek Project, is an educational non-profit organization administratively based at North Seattle Community College in the Thornton Creek watershed. Our mission is to create an informed and engaged citizenry by connecting people to nature and each other in the context of their home communities. We are a small office (currently 2 full time staff) and rely on volunteers and interns for much of our work. We are dedicated to our cause and have fun doing our work.
Duties:
This position will be responsible for providing timely, accurate and engaging information to our partners and the public about the Homewaters Project through our website, newsletters, brochures, and other publications.
This position will also be responsible for membership maintenance, assisting with donor cultivation, and providing important technical and office support for the Project staff.
Fellowship Responsibilities:
- Creation and distribution of Homewaters publications and other written communications:
- Create and distribute three newsletters a year
- Create and distribute other publications, including an annual report, a project brochure, and a brochure about the local watershed
- Develop promotional materials for Project programs and events - Management and maintenance Homewaters Project technological resources:
- Maintain and develop the Homewaters website
- Mange the donor database
- Maintain Project list-servs and a photo library
- Further develop and enhance the on-line Community Library
- Oversee the maintenance of computers and other technology equipment, including data back-ups
- Coordinate Technology Team meetings three times a year. - Office support
- Supervise relevant work study students, interns, and volunteers
- Support Director in preparing for presentations, meetings and events
- Assist with fundraising and accounting
- Assist with general office organization
- Maintain inventory of project field equipment and lending library
- Assist with Project field programs as needed
Qualifications:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience with managing and modifying websites
- Experience with publishing software, such as PageMaker and Photoshop
- Experience with MS Word, Access, Excel, and Power Point (database and GIS experience a plus)
Self-motivated and able to work independently - Detail oriented and able to coordinate many different tasks
- Ability to work well with many different kinds of people
- Commitment to the mission of the Homewaters Project
- A sense of humor
- The ideal candidate will have a B.A. in communications or journalism, with an environmental focus.
- He/she will have experience with organizational newsletters, website development, and other promotional material.
- He/she will also have excellent organizational and office management skills.
- Experience with environmental education and community organizing is highly desired.
Terms:
The Communications/Outreach Fellowship will last for 9 months (October 15, 2003- July 15, 2004) and will receive vacation days during the year.
This is a part-time position (24hrs/week) compensated at $1440/month, with flexible scheduling.
The fellowship has the potential to evolve into a full-time position with benefits.
