Position Overview 

The Communications Specialist supports the Media Relations team and coordinates specific media and communications projects. This position will report to the Mission Executive on-site in La Farge, Wisconsin and interface directly with the remote Media/Public Relations team, serving as the bridge between Media, Public Affairs, Marketing, Pools and other cross-departmental teams. 

Responsibilities  

Essential Duties:  

  • Work with the Mission Executive, Director of Media/PR, the remote Regional Media team and the Public Affairs Administration
  • The Communications Specialist (CS) will oversee the communications and media/public relations functions and initiatives as determined by the department strategic priorities and the larger organizational strategic planning process
  • Work seamlessly with a remote team and serve as HQ liaison, participating in cross departmental team meetings with Marketing and M3 as the face of Media/PR

Oversee all M3 communications and Media HR functions required at the HQ: 

  • Maintain a library of PR materials, including press kit, press releases, visual assets, schwag and the online press room
  • Monitor media coverage and develop monthly, quarterly and annual reports
  • Maintain media lists and product mailing lists with Vocus or other tools as needed
  • Support Media and PA team's major announcements and events
  • Craft press materials and editorial calendars as needed
  • Editor of quarterly PR publication THE BUZZ
  • Identify and improve communication efficiencies within company when appropriate

Act as an interdepartmental liaison and with PA Admin, coordinate the flow of information between remote members of the Media/PR team, on-site staff, and internal/external spokespeople: 

  • Fact checking and follow up
  • Press interview scheduling and coordination
  • Coordination of photos and other media assets
  • Ordering of premiums for press
  • Product order fulfillment for media samples
  • Press mailing coordination
  • Coordination of meeting scheduling and logistics
  • Invoice processing
  • Budget tracking 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee Media/PR for the Organic Meat Company
  • Oversee local media and smaller local MW publications and media teaming with the MW Media/PR team who will oversee major MW media
  • Assist procurement initiative, being champion for M3 role in procurement initiative
  • Responsible for updating resources and information for the department as needed
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor 

Qualifications  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, English or related required.
  • Passion for and knowledge of organic food and farming required.
  • Demonstrated ability to network and build bridges between remote and on-site staff.
  • Experience coordinating Earned Media initiatives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage deadlines and changes given reactive nature of the media.
  • Ability to problem-solve, particularly in an environment with off-site team members.
  • Ability to work independently, remotely and in team settings.
  • Ability to multi-task, work efficiently and communicate effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to work with confidential information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and ability and willingness to learn other administrative software programs required.
  • Experience coordinating Earned Media initiatives, including proven ability to pitch and secure media coverage.
