Job Summary
As a member of the Communications Department, the Communications Manager is responsible for driving media relations, key communications initiatives, PR campaigns and events. The position is based in NY city at our NY headquarters in the West Village.
Essential Duties
To perform this job successfully, the incumbent must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Additional duties may be added or assigned at any time. The Communication Manager manages all aspects of the Media Map data base including follow up with editors, working as a liaison between the VP of Communications, based in Massachusetts, the New York office, and the Seattle office and provides key support in the area of media relations through the following activities:
- Sends out press kits and broadcast footage of the company's expedition travel and environmental efforts;
- Provides research on consumer, trade and business press;
- Works with editorial calendars; drafts press releases and develops summary reports regarding communications activities for other departments;
- Maintains news clip archives, handles paste ups and updates press kits;
- Assists in production and execution of all consumer and trade press mailings including news release production (formatting, proofing, archive maintenance), mailing list preparation, and mailing;
- Attends communications and marketing strategy meetings;
- Works with communications team to develop and design key initiatives including events for the media in northeast and other regional markets;
- Manages all aspects of PR promotions and donations including working with promotional partners, non profit organizations receiving donations, Lindblad travel reservations, and guides recipients through the expedition travel process and in-house promotional guidelines;
- Provides creative and support assistance of on-board events including managing our journalist-on-board program, press conferences, desk-side briefings and other events on board ships when needed;
- Assists in the development and creation of strategic partnerships and alliances with environmental non-profits, like-minded companies and National Geographic, our key strategic partner.
- Assists in the archives of Lindblad Expeditions, working on special projects such as books, logs and other archival materials;
- Coordinates company communications materials including the LEX newsletter;
General Qualifications
Education/Experience:
BA in Communications, Marketing, or English required. Prior Public Relations experience (5-10 years) and experience required in pitching media, working with editorial deadlines, media relations, and marketing communications.
Communication Skills:
Must have excellent communications skills, both oral and written. Must have good listening skills and attention to detail. Must be able to work with a variety of staff from multiple departments and must have excellent interpersonal skills.
Other Skills/Abilities:
Proficient computer skills in the Windows operating system. Must be able to work at a high-paced speed, often around reporters' deadlines and press events. Must be self-motivated, positive, energetic, adaptable and flexible. Must be able to work independently, at times initiating tasks, as well as with a team. Occasional travel may be required.
