Position Summary

The Communications Director is responsible for developing and implementing strategies for internal and external communications, including media campaigns, and overseeing production of electronic communications (including website, social media, email campaigns) and print publications (including quarterly Outdoor America magazine). As a member of the senior management team, the Communications Director assists in the overall operation of the League, including strategic planning, financial management, and chapter and member relations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement an annual communications strategy to further the League’s mission.
  • Serve as managing editor of Outdoor America magazine, which includes (but is not limited to) writing and editing content, working with staff to develop story ideas, managing freelance writers and designers, developing and maintaining production schedules, and communicating with the printer.
  • Write original content and edit content produced by League staff, volunteers/members, and contractors.
  • Supervise communications staff, contractors, and vendors.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key media contacts. Write, edit, and distribute press releases, editorial board memos, and other materials.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism, communications, marketing, public affairs, or related field of study. Master’s degree in similar field desirable.
  • Communications experience with conservation, natural resource, or environmental issues highly beneficial.

Experience & Core Competencies:

  • Seven to ten years of experience planning and implementing successful communications strategies.
  • Demonstrated writing, editing, and message development skills.
  • Experience managing production of recurring print publications, particularly magazines.
  • Experience using content management systems to manage a website.
  • Experience managing social media channels (especially Facebook and Instagram).
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience in all aspects of media relations.
  • Demonstrable management experience, including supervising staff, budgeting, and strategic planning.
  • Knowledge of brand strategy and development.
  • Ability to balance multiple demands and deadlines with composure.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent the League to the public, media, and partner organizations.
