Defenders of Wildlife is a leading environmental nonprofit focused on endangered species and habitat preservation in North America.
Position:
The communications coordinator will develop a strong knowledge of current issues of importance to Defenders and provide support to communications staff on various matters relating to those issues. The communications coordinator will develop and manage press databases, monitor press coverage, conduct research, respond to requests for materials and assist the vice president of communications on various projects, in addition to serving as an administrative assistant to the entire communications department, including its publications division.
Duties:
1) General Duties: Process key paperwork for department, including contracts and budget/expenses; organize and maintain an inventory of Defenders' publications; respond to requests for past articles and publications from public and staff; assist in soliciting, organizing and tracking and returning photos; manage internal photo library; write quarterly board reports, and other department administrative duties.
2) Media Work: Manage and create press databases using PR Newswire. Distribute press releases to reporters and make sure materials are posted on web site. Manage and update "news" webpage. Respond to requests for information on media requests or publication information. Research and provide analysis on various reporters beat areas and positions on issues. Help with research to assist in the development of press releases, op-eds, fact sheets, proposals and national reports.
3) Assist vice president of communications in scheduling meetings, conducting research on various priority projects, morning briefings on key press coverage and possible need for rapid response.
4) Research: conduct internet research. Monitor news sources for issues of relevance to Defenders' programs. Conduct research on press coverage daily and provide daily clips report to organization staff.
5) Events: Plan and organize department events including meetings, receptions and press conferences; attend and represent department at internal staff meetings. Assist in implementation of other Defenders' programs including rallies, public fairs, lobbying campaigns; be an energetic and enthusiastic advocate for Defenders' programs.
6) Computer Assistance: Trouble-shoot problems with computers in conjunction with the systems administrator; database creation and maintenance; knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Power Point, the Internet; and willingness to learn new or added features.
8) General Support: Answering phones; copying, mailing and faxing; preparing and organizing files, distributing information; staff travel arrangements, and communication with other staff and members.
Qualifications:
1) Must be able to aggressively manage several tasks at once, use sound judgment and follow up on prioritized assignments. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Communications, media, environmental experience or interest preferred.
2) Office administrative experience and/or training, familiarity with the workings of a communications office; knowledge of basic programs including Excel, Power Point, and MS Word as well as research skills.
