Food & Water Watch is a nonprofit consumer rights organization that challenges the corporate control and abuse of our food supply and water resources. We are seeking a communications associate to implement media outreach strategies for national, regional, and local issue campaigns.
The communications associate will help develop media messages and outreach strategies for both new and traditional media with each of the organization's three issue campaign teams. This person will write and edit materials such as newsletter articles, news advisories, talking points, letters to the editor, website text, and responses to web news or blogs. In addition, the communications associate will develop and maintain press lists, monitor news coverage, and collect press clips.
Specific Responsibilities:
* Participate in planning and implementation of national, state and local media campaigns.
* Pitch Food & Water Watch issues and reports to reporters, columnists, editorial writers, and news and talk show producers.
* Maintain regular information flow to these contacts including e-mailing, blast faxing, and mailing of pertinent information such as news releases and editorial board memos.
* Write and edit materials such as newsletter articles, news advisories, talking points, letters to the editor, website text, and responses to web news or blogs.
* Maintain media databases and research new media contacts.
* Monitor news coverage and maintain news clips file.
* Develop and implement outreach strategies for online media, including developing content for podcasts and blog entries.
* Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Candidate must have at least one year of professional media relations experience, strong writing and editing skills, and must be able to work quickly in fast-paced environment.
* College degree required.
* Knowledge of how the media works and what is newsworthy; familiarity with national, regional, and state print and electronic media; familiarity with organizing strategies and advocacy techniques.
* At least one year of professional experience in communications or journalism preferably linked to issue campaigns or experience field organizing on issue campaigns with a strong media component; proven experience in developing and executing media strategies.
* Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
* Excellent interpersonal, writing and verbal skills are required
* Good computer skills, including proficiency with database programs.
* Ability to work well with a wide range of people, work well under pressure, handle multiple tasks at once, and adapt to changing situations on a daily basis.
* Strong interest in and commitment to promoting the goals of Food & Water Watch.
