The CFFO Communications Assistant Manager serves as the primary public relations contact for the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Center for the Future of the Oceans (CFFO). S/he works with staff to develop and implement strategic communication goals related to the mission of the CFFO, which is to inspire action for ocean conservation. Working with the Senior Public Relations Manager, s/he serves as a liaison between the CFFO, the aquarium's Communications team and other aquarium departments to advance CFFO communication priorities. S/he helps identify, organize and motivate key aquarium audiences to become advocates for the oceans.
Essential Functions:
1. Working with the Senior Public Relations Manager and the rest of the CFFO team, ensures that strategic communications underpins the ocean advocacy work of the CFFO.
2. Working with the Senior Public Relations Manager, coordinates with CFFO staff and the aquarium's Communications team to create and edit press releases, press kits, advocacy brochures, white papers, op-ed pieces, Shorelines and e-newsletter articles, other collateral, and online materials.
3. Working with the Senior Public Relations Manager, responds to inquiries from local, national and international media, and from the public and other interested parties.
4. Working with the Senior Public Relations Manager, serves as supervising editor and approver for CFFO communications, including e-alerts to advocacy teams, and other writing projects for CFFO.
5. Together with Senior Public Relations Manager, serves as liaison between the CFFO and the aquarium's Communications team.
6. Cultivates and maintains ongoing positive relationships with media, and shares responsibility for the day-to-day operations of media relations on behalf of the CFFO.
Required Knowledge/Experience:
* B.A. or higher degree in Liberal Arts, Communications or Public Relations.
* Minimum two years experience in a Public Relations/Communications position.
* Excellent writing and editing skills.
* Existing contacts in regional and national media, and the skill to generate new ones.
* Microsoft Word (strong skills). " Microsoft Excel and Access (some skills).
* Good telephone skills.
* Ability to work independently.
* Strong people skills.
* A strong interest and commitment to the conservation mission of the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Center for the Future of the Oceans.
