Position Overview

The Coastal Conservation Coordinator works in the Lake Erie Coastal Program and will assist TNC in restoring and reconnecting wetlands throughout Lake Erie’s coastal zone with primary goals of improving habitat quality and improving water quality. This is a grant funded position with existing funding secured through June 30, 2021. Extension of the position beyond this date is contingent upon future funding. The position will be located in Sandusky, Ohio and will report to the Lake Erie Coasts and Islands Program Manager.

Essential Functions:

  • The Coastal Conservation Coordinator provides support for coastal project management, research, and program administration related tasks working toward the achievement of protection, conservation, and stewardship goals within the Lake Erie coastal area.
  • They handle conservation data, participates in project planning, assists in securing contracts and project documentation such as producing maps and reports, communicates with partners, and maintains project records.
  • They may assist in collecting, assembling, and analyzing various types of data, including fieldwork and published documents and surveys.
  • This position works on government grants and assists with managing multiple timelines and contractors.

Responsibilities & Scope

  • Supervises no staff but may oversee and direct work of office volunteers or interns.
  • Oversees contract management for restoration projects.
  • Coordinates multiple tasks or projects in a timely manner and with attention to detail.
  • The Conservation Coordinator may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.  
  • Makes day to day decisions as delegated by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and 2 years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite.  
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects.
  • Experience handling standard business communications.
  • Experience with environmental field work including data collection.

Desired:

  • Master’s Degree in related field, or 2-4 years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Boat operator certification and experience.
  • Experience with wetland and coastal environmental processes and permitting requirements.
  • Experience with procurement processes and contract management.
  • GIS experience.
  • Hydrological and hydrodynamic modeling experience.
  • Understanding of wetland and coastal management practices.

Auto Safety Policy:

  • This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."   • Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
