Climate Justice Organizer

Position Summary

Oregon PSR seeks a dynamic organizer to join our Healthy Climate Program team. The Climate Justice Organizer will work closely with staff and volunteers to bring the voice of medicine and public health to campaigns for climate and energy justice. 

• Supervision: The Climate Justice Organizer will report to the Healthy Climate Program Director and work as part of a collaborative team with other staff and volunteers.
• Location: The position is based in Oregon, and will be remote until public health guidance warrants resuming in-person work. Then it will entail travel in Oregon and SW Washington for rallies, hearings, meetings, and outreach events. The position may be based out of our Portland office, housed in an office in another part of the state, or a home-based office.
• Hours: Primarily weekdays with some weekend and evening work required.
• Compensation: This is a full time, 40-hour a week, non-exempt position with generous benefits including one month paid vacation, health, dental, complementary and alternative medical care, and retirement match. Salary range: $45,000-$50,000, depending on experience.

Major Responsibilities

The Climate Justice Organizer is responsible for supporting the Healthy Climate Program Director with all aspects of Oregon PSR’s healthy climate program. Duties will include:

• Engaging and organizing members of the health community across the state through Oregon PSR’s Healthy Climate Action Team of volunteers 
• Coordinating trainings and providing support to health professionals on climate, energy, mass incarceration, and just transition issues
• Supporting collaboration with coalition partners working on issues including a just transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, access to clean water, forest health, climate resilience, and understanding mass incarceration as a public health issue
• Participating in organization-wide Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work
• Keeping Oregon PSR members informed about important climate, energy, and justice-related information and opportunities for action
• Advocating for Oregon PSR priorities with elected officials at the local, state, and national level
• Researching, writing, and distributing information about climate, energy, and health justice through social media, our website, newsletter and other means
• Representing Oregon PSR at events, including speaking at public hearings, community forums, and outreach activities (all online or by phone until COVID-19 pandemic restrictions are lifted)
• Supporting organizational fundraising efforts in collaboration with other staff

Required Qualifications

A strong candidate for this position will:

• Have a minimum of two years experience with community organizing, political organizing, and/or engaging with policy makers
• Have a commitment to organizing through a social and racial justice lens
• Demonstrate the ability to motivate and engage our health professional & health advocate members
• Be able to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal communication
• Work well independently and with a team, including within coalitions
• Be highly organized and comfortable with a fast-paced environment  
• Demonstrate experience with social media and digital organizing

Desired Qualifications:

• Background in health, science, or public policy
• Proficiency in Spanish or another language
