Description

With world attention focused on both the environment and the economy, Environmental Defense Fund is where policymakers and business leaders turn for win-win solutions. This leading green group, founded in 1967, has tripled in size over the past decade by focusing on strong science, uncommon partnerships and market-based approaches.

You can be part of a vibrant workplace that welcomes diverse perspectives, talents and contributions, where innovation and a focus on results are a way of life.  With programs from Boston to Beijing, Environmental Defense Fund is the only environmental group to receive an A rating from Wired magazine.

Position Overview:

The Clean Air/Clean Energy Specialist, based in Dallas, will be an integral member of Environmental Defense Fund's Texas air and energy team, working in a high-intensity and multi-disciplinary setting to formulate and implement measures to further reduce air pollution in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and promote clean energy solutions.

Although specific opportunities are still being examined, areas that will likely be of interest include: diesel vehicles and equipment (associated with transportation, goods movement, and construction); gasoline cars and trucks; gas production activities in the Barnett Shale; and energy efficiency in large apartment complexes.

The successful candidate must have the requisite experience and discretion to make independent decisions regarding priorities and specific actions to be taken, in the context of the organization's overall goals and in consultation with other Environmental Defense Fund staff members.

Responsibilities:

More specifically, the selected candidate's responsibilities will include:

  • Work with a variety of parties, including government, business, civic and grassroots organizations, and others to achieve measurable environmental results.
  • Build, develop, and grow strategic coalitions and other relationships vital to the success of the project.
  • Work with Environmental Defense Fund staff in Austin and other offices to design innovative regulatory, voluntary, legislative, contractual or technical solutions for implementation.
  • Monitor ongoing activities related to air quality and energy policy in the region; communicate key events to other Environmental Defense Fund staff; help decide in which activities to actively participate; and identify new strategic opportunities.
  • Help develop and take lead in the execution of communications and advocacy strategies, including serving as a local spokesperson, as needed.
  • Represent Environmental Defense Fund at meetings and on relevant committees.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in environmental science, environmental policy, or public policy. Candidates without a graduate degree will be considered based on qualifying experience.
  • 2 years or more of work experience in environmental management, energy policy, policy analysis, environmental advocacy, or related fields.
  • Working knowledge of current issues relating to air quality and energy in Texas is strongly preferred.
  • Ability and interest to work independently in a field office without day to day management support.
  • Demonstrated advocacy skills and organizing experience preferred.
  • Ability to recognize and build on political opportunities for progress.
  • Results-oriented, self-starter with the ability to think strategically and carry out responsibilities in a timely and effective manner with minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional personal organization and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience in performing rigorous analysis in support of highly visible work.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a leader or member of teams in a dynamic and creative environment with colleagues and partners of varied background and experience;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • IBM PC computer proficiency, experience with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

Location: Candidate will work independently from a one-person field office in Dallas, but will maintain close liaison with staff in Austin and other Environmental Defense Fund offices, as well as other Dallas-based environmental groups.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience.  Excellent benefits package.
